PM Modi to attend 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive here on Thursday on a two-day visit, during which he will hold talks with his Thai counterpart Paetongtarn Shinawatra and attend the 6th BIMSTEC Summit.
Modi will be given a grand welcome by the Indian community in Thailand and is scheduled to meet Shinawatra at the Government House, where he will be accorded a ceremonial welcome.
On Thursday evening, the Prime Minister will join the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) leaders from Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar and Bhutan to oversee the signing of the Agreement on Maritime Cooperation.
From Thailand, Prime Minister will travel to Sri Lanka on a State Visit from 4 – 6 April 2025, at the invitation of the President of Sri Lanka, H.E. Mr. Anura Kumara Disanayaka.
During the visit, Prime Minister will hold discussions with the President of Sri Lanka to review progress made on the areas of cooperation agreed upon in the Joint Vision for "Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future” adopted during the Sri Lankan President’s State Visit to India. Prime Minister will also have meetings with senior dignitaries and political leaders. As part of the visit, Prime Minister will also travel to Anuradhapura for inauguration of development projects implemented with Indian financial assistance.
PM Modi's visit to the South Asian country at the invitation of the Thai government is expected to strengthen ties and reaffirm India's commitment to regional cooperation.
This would be the second meeting between PM Modi and his Thai counterpart, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Earlier, PM Modi visited Thailand in 2019, and this visit is expected to build on the positive momentum of bilateral relations.
The last BIMSTEC Summit was hosted by Colombo in virtual format.
Established in June 1997, the BIMSTEC regional grouping forms a unique link between South and South-East Asia with five members from South Asia - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka - and two from South-East Asia, including Myanmar and Thailand.
