PM Modi to unveil 109 climate-resilient crop Varieties at Delhi event
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient, and biofortified crop varieties during an event at the India Agricultural Research Institute in Delhi this Sunday. According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, Modi will also engage with farmers and scientists at the event.
The new varieties encompass 61 different crops, including 34 field crops and 27 horticultural varieties. Field crops will feature cereals, millets, forage crops, oilseeds, pulses, sugarcane, cotton, and fiber crops, among others. Horticultural releases will cover fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, tubers, spices, flowers, and medicinal plants.
Modi has long championed sustainable farming practices and the integration of climate-resilient methods. The promotion of biofortified crops is aligned with government initiatives such as the Mid-Day Meal scheme and Anganwadi programs, aimed at combating malnutrition. These efforts aim to enhance nutrition, improve farmers' income, and open new entrepreneurial avenues.
The release of these 109 crop varieties signifies a major stride towards sustainable agriculture, reinforcing India's commitment to green and sustainable farming practices. Additionally, the government is advancing the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), part of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), which seeks to make Indian agriculture more resilient to climate change. The 2023-24 Budget also includes the 'PM Programme for Restoration, Awareness, Nourishment and Amelioration of Mother Earth' (PM-PRANAM) to promote alternative fertilizers and balanced chemical fertilizer usage.
