NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Tuesday that the central government remains open to suggestions from all political parties ahead of the Budget Session of Parliament.

Rijiju's remarks come after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired an all-party meeting today ahead of the Budget session, which will begin on January 28 and run until April 2.

Rijiju also said that discussions must adhere strictly to established parliamentary rules.

Speaking to reporters after an all-party meeting, Rijiju said, "As per the rules, the discussions should revolve around the Budget only. The President will address the joint session of the Parliament at the beginning of the Budget session. After that motion on vote of thanks on the President's speech will held where all parties will participate. The government will always be happy to hear any suggestions."

"The government is always ready to listen, but if everytime the Opposition parties do hungama and not let the house function, then problem arises," Kiren Rijiju told reporters.

Further, TDP Parliamentary Party leader Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu said the party raised three national issues and five Andhra Pradesh-related issues after the all-party meeting.

The issues include India's FTAs, social media rules for under-16s, and the Amaravati capital bill.

Speaking to the reporters, Devarayalu said, "We wanted to take up three national issues and five issues related to Andhra Pradesh. The first national issue concerned FTAs signed by India, including the India-EU FTA...We wanted a discussion on this. Another issue we want to discuss is the social media ban for those under 16. If Australia can do it, why can't India? The major state issue we want to take up is the Amaravati capital bill issue. We want Andhra Pradesh's capital to have legislative backing."

Senior leaders, including Rajnath Singh, Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister JP Nadda, Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Pramod Tiwari, AITC leader Shatabdi Roy, MNM founder Kamal Haasan, Tamil Manila Congress leader GK Vasan, and SP leader Ramgopal Yadav and many other senior leaders attended the meeting.

The meeting, held in the main Committee Room of Parliament, outlined the agenda for the upcoming Budget session.

The Budget Session will commence on January 28 and continue till April 2, with one break. The first phase is scheduled from January 28 to February 13, while the second phase will run from March 9 to April 2.

The Budget Session will feature 30 sittings, with the Union Budget 2026-27 being presented on February 1. President Droupadi Murmu will formally open the session, addressing members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

In the last two sessions, including the monsoon and winter sessions in 2025, the Opposition parties have sought to discuss the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, which is underway across the country.
 

MUMBAI [Maha Media]: At least six persons were injured in a gas cylinder blast in Mumbai's Malad area on Tuesday morning, civic officials said.

The incident occurred at 9.25 am following a suspected gas leak from a cylinder at a chawl (row tenement) near Bharat Mata School at Malvani in Malad (West), they said.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also extended greetings on the day, posting, "Heartiest birthday greetings to Meghalaya CM Shri Conrad K Sangma ji! Wishing you a long life and good health!"

Along with that, Assam CM, Himanta Biswa Sarma, also posted a congratulatory post, praising Sangma's leadership and hailing the progress of Meghalaya under him.

National People's Party chief Conrad K Sangma took the oath as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya for the second consecutive term in March 2023. Along with him, Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers of Meghalaya, in Shillong.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called on global investors to tap into India’s rapidly expanding energy sector, highlighting investment opportunities worth nearly USD 500 billion and asserting that the country is on track to emerge as the world’s largest oil refining hub in the near future.

Speaking at India Energy Week (IEW) 2026, Modi urged international companies to invest across key segments such as refining, oil and gas exploration, LNG infrastructure, city gas distribution and downstream petrochemicals.

“The energy sector lies at the core of India’s growth ambitions. It offers investment opportunities of around USD 500 billion. My message to the world is simple — Make in India, innovate in India, scale with India and invest in India,” the Prime Minister said.

He noted that India aims to attract USD 100 billion in investments in the oil and gas sector by 2030. As part of this expansion, the country’s refining capacity is planned to increase from the current 260 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to over 300 MTPA.

Modi said India has significantly liberalised its exploration and production regime, creating new prospects for investors. The government has reduced no-go areas, introduced policy reforms based on industry feedback and expanded the scope of exploration activities.

“Our goal is to open up exploration over one million square kilometres. More than 170 blocks have already been awarded, and regions such as the Andaman and Nicobar basin are emerging as promising hydrocarbon zones,” he said, adding that deep-sea exploration under the ‘Samudra Manthan’ initiative is also progressing.

Highlighting India’s strengths, the Prime Minister pointed out that the country already ranks second globally in refining capacity and is poised to take the top position soon. This scale, he said, provides a strong competitive advantage for investors.

He also emphasised the growing role of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in India’s energy mix. The government has set a target of meeting 15 per cent of total energy demand through LNG, which opens opportunities across the entire value chain — from terminals and ports to re-gasification facilities and pipeline networks.

India is simultaneously scaling up LNG transportation infrastructure, including domestic shipbuilding capabilities. Modi noted that a Rs 70,000 crore shipbuilding programme has recently been launched to support this effort.

The Prime Minister highlighted city gas distribution as another high-growth area, with networks expanding rapidly to new urban centres. Rising incomes, population growth and industrial demand are also expected to drive increased consumption of petrochemicals, necessitating large investments in energy infrastructure.

“India is implementing reforms at an unprecedented pace to create a transparent, investor-friendly ecosystem in hydrocarbons and allied sectors,” Modi said, adding that the country is moving beyond energy security towards energy self-reliance.

With competitive refining and transportation costs, India aims not only to meet domestic energy needs but also to strengthen its position as a reliable energy exporter, he added.

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said that the signing of the technology and defence partnership between India and the European Union marks a significant step in bringing the two sides closer amid a complex global environment.

Addressing the EU delegation led by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, at Raksha Mantralaya, South Block, Singh welcomed the EU leaders' visit, highlighting its special significance as it coincides with India's 75th Republic Day.

"Thank you for your visit to India, your visit is very special as it falls on the occasion of our 75th Republic Day. The occasion marks a milestone in the celebration of India's constitutional journey and the reaffirmation of our commitment to global peace and security," Singh said.

He added that the shared values of democracy, pluralism, federalism, and the rule of law form the foundation of India's growing partnership with the European Union.

"Together we aim to translate these shared values into practical cooperation for global security, sustainable growth, and inclusive prosperity," Singh said.

The Defence Minister emphasised that the partnership reflects the trust between India and the EU and will strengthen cooperation in economic, defence, and people-to-people connect, bringing the two ancient civilisations closer in a rapidly changing world.

"The signing of the technology and defence partnership between India and the European Union is a reflection of this trust in action, and it brings us together in an increasingly complex global environment. I hope the increased momentum of the India-EU partnership in economic, defence, and people-to-people connect will bring the two ancient civilisations much closer," he added.

The technology and defence partnership was signed ahead of the 16th India-EU Summit, co-chaired by President of the European Council Antonio Luis Santos da Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, who are on a state visit to India.

India now joins Japan and South Korea as the third Asian country to have such a security and defence partnership with the EU, aimed at enhancing collaboration in maritime security, cybersecurity, counterterrorism, and other emerging defence domains. The new pact does not limit India's engagement with the EU to procurement alone, with the EU now seeing India as a ptential supplier in certain areas and as a partner.

India-EU security and defence ties have deepened significantly in 2025, marked by the Leaders' Statement from the February College of Commissioners' visit to India, which agreed to explore a Security and Defence Partnership and included discussions between the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space and India's Minister of State for Defence.

This momentum continued with a December 2025 delegation from the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers visiting Brussels to engage with the EU Commissioner, fostering industrial cooperation. In September 2025, the EU Political and Security Committee - representing all 27 member states - made its first-ever visit to Asia, holding high-level meetings in India with the Foreign Secretary, Deputy NSA, and Secretary (West) to advance strategic dialogue.

Complementing these efforts, joint naval exercises have strengthened maritime security cooperation, including in the Indian Ocean in June 2025, the Gulf of Guinea in October 2023, and the Gulf of Aden in June 2021, alongside collaborative escort operations for humanitarian assistance near Somalia in 2018 and 2019. 
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint session of the Parliament at 11 AM on Wednesday, four days before Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman is all set to present the Union Budget for 2026-27 in the Parliament on February 1.

Interestingly, this year’s budget would be the first in history to be presented on a Sunday. Sitharaman’s budget presentation will also mark her ninth budget in the Parliament.

Beginning with President Murmu's address, the first phase of the budget session will begin on January 28, 2026 and conclude on February 13, 2026, which will be followed by a recess and a second phase thereafter.

"The first phase concludes on 13 February 2026, with Parliament reassembling on 9 March 2026, a vital step towards meaningful debate and people-centric governance," a note issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat earlier stated.

The second phase will commence on March 9, 2026 and continue till April 2. There will be 30 sittings in all during the budget session, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said.

As many as nine bills are currently pending in the Lok Sabha, and these may come up for discussion. The bills include the Developed India Education Foundation Bill, 2025, the Securities Market Code, 2025, and the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024. All these bills are under review by parliamentary standing or select committees.

The Finance Ministry hosts a traditional halwa ceremony, which marks the beginning of printing of the Budget documents. The ceremony initiates the "lock in" of documents, preventing them from leaking, until it is tabled in Parliament.

This will be the third full budget of the Narendra Modi 3.0 government. The Lok Sabha has tentatively scheduled three days from February 2 to 4 for discussion on the motion of thanks on the President's address. According to the sources, there will be no Zero Hour on January 28 and February 1.

A note issued by Lok Sabha Secretary General PC Mody, members of the Parliament are requested to arrive at the Parliament House by 10.30 AM on Wednesday in order to obviate any inconvenience.

According to a Rajya Sabha bulletin, the President will arrive at the Parliament House at 10.55 AM and will be conducted to the Lok Sabha Chamber, Parliament House at 11:00 AM sharp.

"Members are requested to take their seats in the Lok Sabha Chamber by 10.45 A.M. i.e., fifteen minutes before the President arrives in the Lok Sabha Chamber. Members are also requested not to leave the venue during the Address. After the Address, the President will leave the Lok Sabha Chamber in procession. Members are requested to remain in the Lok Sabha Chamber, until at least five minutes after the President has left the venue," the Rajya Sabha bulletin stated.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The Supreme Court on Tuesday observed that development and the protection of the environment have to go hand in hand.

A plea filed by one Firdos Cambatta came up for hearing before a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and comprising justices R Mahadevan and Joymalya Bagchi.

The petitioner, a resident of Ahmedabad's Hansol village, moved the apex court in connection with large-scale tree felling. Concluding the hearing in the matter, the CJI said development and environment have to go hand in hand.

The bench said the subject land does not fall under the definition of forest land, and it is satisfied that the expert committee, in its conclusive remarks, has effectively addressed the cause flagged by the appellant in his representation to the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The bench declined to interfere with the tree felling after observing that the trees cut were wild growth and not much effort would be required for their regrowth.

The bench said that what is required to be done by the appellant or some other genuine environmentalist is to ensure that the double trees, which are being cut to develop the helipad, are planted on a suitable piece of land. The bench added that for this purpose, the appellant can move an application before the NGT, which may in turn constitute a committee of experts, particularly from the forest department, to select the varieties of the trees, identify the land, and see whether the condition of the land is suitable for such plantation.

The bench said NGT can ensure adequate funds for the selection of trees and their subsequent supervision are allocated, or such an exercise is undertaken by the forest department of the state government. The bench said the NGT, through its supervisory committee, can ensure that trees are actually planted, and thereafter, for a period of five years, the periodical reports regarding the mortality rate, if any or the appropriate growth of the trees could also be observed/ monitored.

Earlier, the Pune NGT had declined to interfere with the tree felling after noting that the trees sought to be felled were gando baval (sometimes referred to as mad tree) trees, which were not protected vegetation, and that these trees lay on non-forest land.

In December last year, the NGT also rejected a claim that these trees lay in ecologically sensitive land, while closing an application filed to stop the tree-felling activities.

During the hearing today, the petitioner’s counsel contended that larger trees were being cut. The bench said, “When you construct a helipad for the purpose of accessibility to a remote area….” The counsel said the airport is right there, and Hansol is the airport, and the airport is five minutes away from this area. The bench said even if the airport is there, the helipad is a different kind of facility. “To cut down an old forest like this with no permission…”, said the counsel.

The CJI said it is not a notified forest area, plants are not part of a forest, rather they are wild growth, and in any case, they have ensured that the double trees will be planted, and asked the petitioner to suggest a site for the double plantation. “In instances like this, you have a ready-made forest. You are trying under the town planning scheme to increase forest cover in Ahmedabad….”, argued the counsel.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]:Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present a record ninth consecutive budget on February 1, which is expected to contain reform measures aimed at shoring up economic growth amid a volatile geopolitical situation.

This will take Sitharaman closer to the record of 10 budgets that were presented by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai over different time periods. Desai presented a total of 6 budgets during his tenure as finance minister in 1959-1964, and 4 budgets between 1967-1969. Former finance ministers P Chidambaram and Pranab Mukherjee had presented nine and eight budgets, respectively, under different prime ministers.

Sitharaman, however, will continue to hold the record of presenting the most budgets on the trot - nine straight budgets under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She was in 2019 appointed as India's first full-time woman finance minister when Prime Minister Modi won a decisive second term. After Modi came back to power in 2024 for the third time, Sitharaman continued to retain her finance portfolio.

So far, she has presented a total of eight straight budgets, including an interim one in February 2024. Here are some facts related to the Budget presentation in Independent India.

FIRST BUDGET: The first-ever Union Budget of independent India was presented on November 26, 1947, by the nation's first finance minister, R K Shanmukham Chetty.

MOST NUMBER OF BUDGETS: Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai holds the record for presenting the largest number of budgets. He has presented a total of 10 budgets during his tenure as finance minister under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and later under Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

He presented his first budget on February 28, 1959, and presented full budgets in the following two years before presenting an interim one in 1962. This was followed by two full budgets. After four years, he presented another interim budget in 1967, followed by three full budgets in 1967, 1968, and 1969, presenting a total of 10 budgets.

SECOND HIGHEST NUMBER OF BUDGETS: Former finance minister P Chidambaram presented the budget on nine occasions. He first presented the budget on March 19, 1996, during the United Front government led by Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. He presented another budget under the same government the next year and returned to the hot seat when the Congress-led UPA came to power in 2009.

He presented five budgets between 2004 and 2008. After a stint as Union Home Minister, he was back in the finance ministry and presented budgets in 2013 and 2014.

THIRD HIGHEST NUMBER OF BUDGETS: Pranab Mukherjee presented eight budgets during his tenure as finance minister. He presented budgets in 1982, 1983 and 1984 and five straight ones between February 2009 and March 2012 in the Congress-led UPA government.

MANMOHAN SINGH: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presented five straight budgets between 1991 and 1995 when he was finance minister in the P V Narasimha Rao government.

LONGEST BUDGET SPEECH: Sitharaman holds the record for the longest budget speech when her presentation on February 1, 2020, lasted two hours and 40 minutes. At the time, she cut short her speech with two pages remaining.

SHORTEST BUDGET SPEECH: Hirubhai Mulljibhai Patel's interim Budget speech in 1977 is so far the shortest at just 800 words.

TIMING: The Budget was traditionally presented on the last day of February at 5 pm. The timing followed a colonial era practice when the announcements could be made in London and India at the same time. India is 4 hours and 30 minutes ahead of British Summer Time, and so presenting the budget at 5 pm in India ensured that it was happening in the daytime in the United Kingdom.

The timing was changed in 1999 when the then finance minister, Yashwant Sinha, in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, presented the budget at 11 am. Since then, budgets are presented at 11 am.

DATE: The Budget presentation date was in 2017, changed to the 1st of February to allow the government to complete the Parliamentary approval process by March-end and allow implementation of the Budget from the start of the fiscal on April 1.

Presenting the Budget on February 29 meant that the implementation could not start before May/June, after accounting for 2-3 months of the parliamentary approval process.
 

KOLKATA [Maha Media]: BJP National President Nitin Nabin will be on a two-day visit to West Bengal starting Tuesday. During this visit, he will review the BJP's preparations ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, hold several organisational meetings, and participate in public programs. This marks Nabin's first visit to West Bengal after assuming the charge as the BJP National President, said the BJP.

Nitin Nabin will arrive at Andal Airport, Durgapur, this evening, where he will receive a grand welcome from senior party office-bearers. Later, the BJP National President will inaugurate the grand "Kamal Mela" at Chitralaya Mela Maidan, Durgapur. It may be noted that the Durgapur Nagarik Manch is organising this Kamal Mela with the resolve to restore West Bengal's great culture and heritage pride.

Following this, Nabin will chair a high-level meeting with the state BJP core committee in Durgapur.

On Wednesday, he will offer prayers at the historic Bhiringi Kali Mandir in the morning and will then address the BJP Karyakarta Sammelan of the Bardhaman division at Chitralaya Mela Maidan, Durgapur. Thereafter, the National President will address the Asansol district BJP Karyakarta Sammelan in Raniganj.

Ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026, the BJP has finalised a detailed list of Prabasi leaders from various states to strengthen its election campaign across different zones of the state, including Nabadwip, Kolkata, Howrah-Hooghly-Midnapore region.

The list includes senior leaders, legislators, former ministers, organisational office-bearers, and youth leaders deputed from several states such as Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, and Tripura. These leaders will work in coordination with the West Bengal BJP unit to oversee organisational activities, election preparedness, and grassroots mobilisation in the allotted districts.

West Bengal State President Samik Bhattacharya has appointed in-charges for the respective assembly constituencies for the Legislative Assembly elections 2026. Bhattacharya announced the Assembly in-charges on all 294 seats.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah will visit West Bengal on January 30 and 31. During his two-day tour, Amit Shah is expected to hold important organisational and political meetings, further energising the party cadre and reviewing preparations for the upcoming political challenges in the state.

MUMBAI [Maha Media]: Thousands of farmers and tribal residents from Nashik district continued their march towards Mumbai on Tuesday, demanding land rights and other long-pending issues, even as the Maharashtra government invited a delegation of the protesters for discussions later in the day.

The agitation, led by the CPI(M)-backed All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), began on Sunday after a protest outside the Dindori tehsil office failed to secure firm commitments from the authorities, former MLA J P Gavit said.

Following the stalemate, the protesters decided to take their demands directly to the state government by undertaking a foot march to the state capital. According to organisers, arrangements have been made to ensure food, firewood, grains and other basic necessities for the participants throughout the journey.

Over the past two days, the marchers have covered close to 60 kilometres. On Tuesday morning, they descended the Kasara Ghat and crossed into neighbouring Thane district after leaving Nashik, Gavit said.

He claimed the scale of mobilisation and sustained media attention around the march prompted the state government to call the protesters for talks at the Mantralaya in Mumbai.

A delegation comprising Gavit, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and AIKS national president Ashok Dhawale, Kisan Sabha national joint secretary Ajit Navale and MLA Vinod Nikole is scheduled to meet the chief minister and other senior ministers to discuss the demands.

According to Gavit, tribal farmers from Peth, Surgana, Kalwan and Trimbakeshwar talukas are participating in the march to highlight unresolved concerns related to land ownership, irrigation facilities and forest rights.

These regions are drought-prone, and farmers have been pressing for the construction of major check dams on west-flowing rivers and their tributaries to improve irrigation for agriculture.

The protesters are also seeking regularisation of farming on encroached land up to four hectares, issuance of land ownership records, review of rejected forest rights claims and procurement of produce grown on forest land at minimum support prices.

Traffic disruptions were reported over the last two days in parts of Dindori due to sit-in protests, forcing authorities to divert vehicles through alternate routes.

Gavit said a meeting with Nashik Collector Ayush Prasad had already taken place, during which it was agreed that district-level issues would be addressed locally, while broader policy-related demands would be taken up with the state government in Mumbai.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Banking operations at public sector banks across the country were impacted on Tuesday as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) went on nationwide strike demanding the immediate implementation of a five-day work week.

The strike call by the UFBU, an umbrella body of nine unions representing officers and employees, comes after a conciliation meeting with the Chief Labour Commissioner on January 23 failed to yield a positive outcome. "Since there was no positive outcome and the government did not agree to our demand, hence this strike is forced on us. Bank employees and officers are highly aggrieved that they alone are being discriminated against," All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), a constituent of UFBU, general secretary C H Venkatachalam told the news agency.

Most branches of public sector banks across the country were either completely closed or partially closed as both employees and officers were observing Tuesday's strike.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The temple committees of the Char Dham shrines may consider passing resolutions to ban the entry of “non-Hindus” into temple premises, with Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) president Hemant Dwivedi stating that a decision could be taken at an upcoming board meeting.

Dwivedi said the board would convene to pass a resolution banning the entry of non-Hindus and that the matter would also be discussed with the state administration and the Chief Minister. He added that similar demands have been raised regarding the entry of non-Hindus at ghats in Haridwar.

However, a senior office-bearer of the BKTC clarified that no such discussion has taken place so far and that the statement was made without consultation with the board or stakeholders. The official said the next board meeting, scheduled in February, is primarily to chart the budget.

The office-bearer pointed out that traders, labourers and others associated with temple activities include non-Hindus and questioned how they could be excluded. He also noted that non-Hindus often accompany government officers and dignitaries to the temples. He added that Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists would not be excluded and remarked that the issue required wider consultation.

The BKTC is a government undertaking with 17 members, constituted under a 1948 Act. It governs the administration of the Badrinath and Kedarnath temples, with the chairman and vice-chairman nominated by the state government.

Meanwhile, Shri Gangotri Dham Temple Committee chairman Dharmanand Semwal said his board would deliberate on a similar proposal, adding that the issue reflects sentiments raised by local residents. He said no resolution has been passed yet and that any decision would be forwarded to the administration for approval before implementation.

The Char Dham shrines attract lakhs of pilgrims and tourists every year. In 2025, the four Dhams recorded a footfall of about 51 lakh visitors, with Kedarnath seeing the highest number at 17.68 lakh pilgrims.

Former chief minister and Congress leader Harish Rawat criticised the move, alleging communal polarisation and questioning whether constitutional authorities could be restricted based on religion. Senior Congress leader Suryakant Dhasmana also termed the proposal a diversionary tactic, stating that under the Constitution, public spaces cannot bar entry based on religion.
 

BENGALURU [Maha Media]: Opposition BJP and JD(S) staged a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue at Vidhana Soudha here on Tuesday, demanding the suspension of some Congress legislators for allegedly "insulting and disrespecting" Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot during the joint sitting of the state legislature.

Raising anti-Congress government slogans, the protesters demanded justice.

They also demanded the removal of Excise Minister R B Timmapur over the alleged Excise Department scam, law and order failures and inadequate security for women in the state.

Leaders of the Opposition both in the Assembly and Council -- R Ashoka and Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, state BJP chief B Y Vijayendra, BJP MLC C T Ravi, JD(S) leaders Suresh Babu and S L Bhojegowda, along with MLAs and MLCs of both parties were part of the protest.

Speaking to media here, BJP State President Vijayendra demanded that a thorough investigation must be conducted into the excise scam involving more than Rs 6,000 crore. The probe should be carried out either by a sitting High Court judge or by the CBI, he added.

Vijayendra alleged that the entire country has witnessed Congress "goons" behaving in a hooligan-like manner towards the Governor inside the House.

Condemning the insult and alleged misconduct shown towards the Governor during the joint session, he said, "The (Congress) government is now trying to justify those actions."

In a high drama in the Karnataka Assembly, the Governor on January 22 refused to read the state-prepared address to a joint session of the state legislature and concluded his customary speech in just three lines, evoking a sharp reaction from the Congress government in the state.

As the Governor proceeded towards the exit door after concluding his three line speech, some ruling party legislators, including MLC Hariprasad, tried to gherao him by shouting slogans. They were removed by the security staff.

Vijayendra claimed that Timmapur's name has surfaced in the excise scam and that even members of the minister's family are being mentioned. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is not allowing a discussion on the issue in the Assembly, he said.

Ashoka claimed that under the Congress government, there is widespread corruption in the Excise Department.

"Every single license requires bribes running into crores. Since the chief minister is also benefiting from this racket, even complaints made to him have received no response. The CM must immediately ensure the resignation of the corrupt Excise Minister; otherwise, our protest will be directed against the chief minister himself," he added.

Narayanaswamy too attacked the Congress government in the state over the excise scam and alleged, "If Rs 6,000 crore has been looted, the Congress must answer what share Siddaramaiah, D K Shivakumar, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Kharge have in it."

"The agitation has already begun and there is no question of pardoning Minister Timmapur. We will not leave the House until he resigns," he told reporters here.

There was no immediate response from the Congress over the allegations.

Koppal Congress MP Rajashekar Basavaraj Hitnal's alleged statement terming the rape and murder of a foreign woman as a minor incident, Congress' false propaganda and protest against central government's new employment guarantee law VB G RAM G, were also among the issues that were highlighted during the protest.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, along with several party legislators and MPs, were taken into preventive custody on Tuesday during a “Raj Bhavan Chalo” protest against the Centre’s move to replace MGNREGA with VB-G RAM G.

The Congress leaders were stopped by police when they tried to march toward Lok Bhavan, alleging that the Union government’s action undermines rural employment rights and weakens Panchayat authority. After delivering speeches, the leaders voluntarily boarded a police bus and courted arrest.

Speaking to the crowd before detention, Siddaramaiah clarified that the “Ram” in VB-G RAM G stands for Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Aajivika Mission (Gramin), and not Dasharath Ram or Seeta Ram. He accused the Centre of dismantling the rural livelihood framework introduced under the UPA government, calling MGNREGA a crucial right to employment.

“MGNREGA ensured work for around five crore people, including differently-abled individuals, in rural areas. Under VB-G RAM G, the Centre decides the work, sidelining Panchayats,” Siddaramaiah said, adding that Panchayats previously received around Rs one crore each, which they would now lose.

He vowed to continue the fight until MGNREGA is restored, asserting that VB-G RAM G does not guarantee employment in the way the previous scheme did. “Gandhiji said villages must develop for the nation to progress. By scrapping MGNREGA, the BJP has betrayed Mahatma Gandhi’s vision,” he said, calling for protests in every village across Karnataka.

Surjewala accused the Centre of deliberately targeting the rural employment scheme and urged the state government to rename Panchayat offices as “Mahatma Gandhi Kendra.” Shivakumar warned of political repercussions for the BJP, stating, “Rural communities will reject VB-G RAM G, and the BJP will face the consequences of repealing the employment guarantee law.”
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude to several world leaders for extending greetings and wishes to India on the occasion of its 77th Republic Day.

Responding to a message from Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay on social media platform X, PM Modi thanked the Bhutanese leadership and people for their warm wishes. He said the special bonds of friendship and the unique ties between India and Bhutan would continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.

In reply to a post by French President Emmanuel Macron, PM Modi thanked him for the warm greetings and said he looked forward to welcoming the French leader to India soon. He added that the visit would help further deepen and diversify the India–France strategic partnership.

Acknowledging greetings from Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, the Prime Minister described Cyprus as a close friend and trusted partner. He reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening the comprehensive partnership between the two countries and said he looked forward to welcoming the Cypriot President to India.

PM Modi also responded to a message from Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, thanking him for the warm Republic Day wishes. He said India would continue to work closely with the Maldives for the benefit of both peoples and extended festive greetings to the Maldivian people.

India celebrated its 77th Republic Day on January 26, marking the adoption of the Constitution and reaffirming its democratic values, with greetings pouring in from leaders across the world.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Following the 77th Republic Day parade on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared glimpses of the celebrations from the Kartavya Path and said that the magnificent display showcased the strength of India’s democracy and national pride.

India celebrated its 77th Republic Day with a spectacular display of its new combat edge, indigenous weaponry, with a ‘Battle Array’ format of the Indian Army, offering a comprehensive visual of battlefield formations and the sequence of operations undertaken during wartime.

Several cultural performances and tableaus were also rolled out at the Kartavya Path during the historic celebrations.

In a post on X, PM Modi said: “India celebrated Republic Day with great enthusiasm and pride. The magnificent parade at Kartavya Path showcased the strength of our democracy, the richness of our heritage and the unity that binds our nation together.”

In a separate post, he said that Kartavya Path witnessed a “powerful display of national pride” during the Republic Day celebrations.

“The Republic Day parade showcased India’s formidable security apparatus, reflecting the nation’s preparedness, technological capability and unwavering commitment to safeguarding its citizens,” he said.

The Republic Day parade, he said, offered a glimpse into the strengthening capabilities of India’s security forces. “Our forces are truly our pride!” he added.

He also shared some photos from the vivid display of India’s cultural mosaic that unfolded at Kartavya Path earlier in the day, marked by vibrant performances and tableaus.

The Republic Day celebrations started with Prime Minister Modi paying homage to the fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial. He laid a wreath at the memorial, leading the nation in honouring the bravehearts who sacrificed their lives on the line of duty protecting the nation.

During this, the Inter-Services Guards, made up of one officer and 21 guards (seven from each service), observed the traditions of ‘Salami Shastra’ followed by ‘Shok Shastra’ to pay their respects.

After witnessing the Republic Day parade, PM Modi yet again broke the protocol and continued his tradition of walking down the Kartavya Path.

He walked quite a distance and greeted enthusiastic attendees seated in enclosures. The people erupted into cheers and clapped as he passed by.

The attendees greeted the Prime Minister with sparkling eyes, tricolours in hands, and chants of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’.

Children climbed on chairs to catch a glimpse of PM Modi with smiling faces.

He then boarded his car and waved to the excited people who were heard shouting ‘Modi-Modi’ slogans as he moved ahead down the Kartavya Path.

Wearing a red-colored tie-and-dye traditional turban with golden peacock feathers motifs, PM Modi also continued his tradition of making the headgear a hallmark of his Republic Day celebrations.

PM Modi also crossed over to the other side of the Kartavya Path, where the excited crowd greeted him and captured the moment with photographs.

This is not the first time the Prime Minister has broken protocol. He has been doing it since 2015.
 

DAUSA [Maha Media]: In a collision between a car and a truck on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway late Monday night, four people were killed and one injured in Dausa district, Rajasthan. The incident occurred near Aaluda village, close to pillar number 194.

The car was registered in Haryana. The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle, leaving the occupants unable to respond. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Nangal Rajawatan, Deepak Meena, said the bodies were badly trapped inside the crashed Ertiga.

He added that as soon as information about the accident was received, a crane and a rescue team were rushed to the scene. After considerable effort, the bodies trapped inside the vehicle were pulled out, and later kept in the district hospital mortuary.

Five people were travelling in the car at the time. Four died on the spot, while one young man was seriously injured. He was rushed to the hospital, where his condition remains critical.

In his statement to police, the injured youth said that after the collision, the truck driver dragged the car for several kilometres. During this time, those trapped inside the vehicle struggled for help, but because of the high speed and darkness, no one could understand what was happening.

Police from Paparda and Nangal Rajawatan stations arrived at the location after receiving information. The debris was scattered across the expressway, and onlookers observed the scene. The accident led to a traffic jam on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway for some time. Police managed traffic and have initiated an investigation.

The unidentified vehicle is being searched for, and CCTV footage from cameras installed along the expressway is being examined.
 

SRINAGAR [Maha Media]: Kashmir was draped in white on Tuesday after the valley received fresh snowfall which led to closure of the Srinagar-Jammu national highway and disrupted flight operations.

Most parts of Kashmir received fresh overnight snowfall as a western disturbance affected the region. The plains of the valley, including Srinagar, recorded light to moderate snow, while the higher reaches received moderate to heavy falls.

The snowfall turned tourists resorts of Sonamarg, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam into winter wonderlands, the officials said.

Snowfall has been recorded across the districts in central, north and south Kashmir.

However, the snowfall led to disruption of road, rail, and air traffic.

The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed for traffic in view of the accumulation of snow between Qazigund and Banihal stretch, the officials said.

They said no traffic is being allowed to ply on the highway even as snow clearance operations were being undertaken.

Rail services have also been affected as few trains between Banihal and Budgam were cancelled due to accumulation of snow along the track, the officials said.

The air traffic to and fro Kashmir valley was also disrupted as flight operations at the Srinagar airport here could not take place due to accumulation of snow on the runway, the officials said.

Airport officials said as many as 50 flights -- 25 inbound and 25 outbound -- have been cancelled so far.

"Due to adverse weather and prevailing conditions at Srinagar Airport, all IndiGo and Air India flights to/from Srinagar have been cancelled for today. Passengers are requested to contact their respective airlines for the latest updates and alternate arrangements," they added.

The disruption in the road and aerial traffic has left many people, especially tourists, stranded.

Police and district administrations in the respective districts have set up control rooms and issued helpline numbers to assist the public amid the inclement weather conditions.

The Meteorological Department has said light to moderate rain or snow is likely at most places with the possibility of moderate to heavy rain or snow with thunder or gusty winds at a few places till Tuesday evening.

Light rain or snow is also possible at a few places on Wednesday, it said.

The Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Disaster Management Authority (JKUTDMA) on Monday issued high and medium intensity avalanche warnings for eleven districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
 

BHOPAL [Maha Media]: Weather in Madhya Pradesh has shown clear changes over the last few days. Some districts have seen a rise in temperature, while others experienced cooler winds and cloudy skies.

These changes have brought partial relief to people in some areas, while in other places there is no major relief yet

According to the weather forecast, temperatures in Madhya Pradesh may rise again by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next few days. Clear skies are expected in most districts. No major rainfall is predicted at present. Because of this, residents may feel warmer days and mild nights ahead.

The night temperature in Bhopal has increased by around 3 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature reached nearly 12 degrees Celsius, reducing the cold feeling during early morning hours.

Day temperatures remained steady at around 25 to 26 degrees Celsius. Residents felt some relief from cold, especially at night, but afternoons stayed slightly warm.

Similar conditions in Indore were reported. Night temperatures rose by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius, settling near 13 degrees Celsius. This brought comfort during the night, and people did not need heavy winter clothes. However, daytime temperatures stayed close to 26 degrees Celsius, meaning there was no full relief from warmth during the day.

Gwalior and Chambal region is experiencing cold winds slowed down, and minimum temperatures went up by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. Nights became less cold, with temperatures around 10 to 11 degrees Celsius.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The Uttarakhand Government has implemented the Uniform Civil Code (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, to introduce necessary amendments to the UCC Act, 2024, following the approval of the Governor.

As per the release from the  Chief Minister’s Office, the ordinance has been promulgated by the Governor of Uttarakhand, under Article 213 of the Constitution of India and has come into force with immediate effect.

It said that through this ordinance, procedural, administrative, and penal improvements have been made to various provisions of the Code to ensure its effective, transparent, and smooth implementation.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, along with promoting women’s empowerment, protecting children’s rights, and ensuring equality in civil rights, one of the UCC’s most significant contributions has been simplifying procedures.

Speaking on the issue, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that by implementing the Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand has shown the way for other states. He added that the transparency and simplicity with which the provisions of the UCC have been implemented over the past year have strengthened public trust in the process.

According to the release, before the implementation of the UCC, marriages were registered under the Uttarakhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2010. The entire process was offline, requiring both spouses and two witnesses to be physically present at the Sub-Registrar’s office.

However, under the UCC, nearly 100 per cent of marriage registrations are now being completed online. Couples and witnesses can apply from anywhere by uploading their records and recording video statements. As a result, until January 19, a total of 4,74,447 marriage registrations had been completed in less than a year since the UCC came into force.

A historic step towards equality, security, and transparency in Uttarakhand, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) today completes one year since its implementation. Enforced on January 27, 2025, the UCC has given a new direction to the state’s social and legal framework. Simplifying and digitising processes related to marriage, divorce, and live-in relationships, it has made systems far more accessible for ordinary citizens.
 
On the completion of one year, “UCC Day” is being observed across the state today. Meanwhile, the state government has also implemented the Uniform Civil Code (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, for necessary reforms, which has come into force with immediate effect following the Governor’s approval. Akashvani’s correspondent reports that the Uttarakhand government has implemented the Uniform Civil Code (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, with the objective of bringing procedural, administrative, and penal reforms to the Uniform Civil Code.
 
Through these amendments, the provisions of the Code have been made clearer and practical, ensuring its effective and transparent implementation. The amendments align criminal procedures and penal provisions with the new Indian legal codes, while also strengthening registration-related powers and the appellate mechanism.
 
During the one-year period of the UCC, its most significant impact has been seen in the marriage registration process. Through the online system, husbands and wives can now register their marriages from anywhere. In the past year, since the implementation of the UCC, more than five lakh marriage registrations have been completed. Earlier, this process was entirely offline and required mandatory presence at the sub-registrar’s office. Under the new system, marriage registration certificates are now being issued within an average of five days.
 
Meanwhile, on the occasion of the completion of one year of the Uniform Civil Code, awareness programs and public interaction events are being organised today at both urban and rural levels across all districts of the state under “UCC Day.
 

KOLKATA [Maha Media]: The death toll in the devastating fire at a warehouse in the Nazirabad area near Kolkata's Anandapur has mounted to eight on Tuesday.

State Minister Arup Biswas and Trinamool MP Saayoni Ghosh visited the site on Monday afternoon. After an inspection, Biswas said, "Although the fire has been brought under control, it is still burning in some pockets as smoke is still emanating from the godown. Firefighters are working tirelessly to douse the remnant fire. Some are falling ill due to intense smoke. Once the fire is completely extinguished, efforts to rescue any missing workers who might be trapped inside will be initiated. A forensic team will visit the spot for investigation. The authorities will investigate whether the fire safety system in the warehouse was functioning properly."

BJP MLA Ashok Dinda reached the spot in the evening. He said, "I heard many workers of a decorating company lived in temporary shelters built inside the warehouse. While four of them managed to escape just before the fire started, many others are likely to have been trapped inside as the main gate was locked."

Sonarpur North constituency MLA Firdausi Begum also came to the site.

The bodies were charred beyond recognition, and fire department sources said DNA samples will be collected from family members to identify them. However, the cause of the blaze and the extent of damage are yet to be ascertained.

Several relatives of the deceased and those missing gathered at the site for the latest information on the rescue operation. Tanmoy Giri, a resident of Tamluk in Purba Medinipur, said, "My uncle, who worked for a decorating firm, used to live in the small rooms inside the warehouse. He called me last at around 1 am. Now his phone is switched off. I have been waiting here since morning."

Another youth said his father came to work on the night shift at the Momo unit. But he couldn't contact him since the fire broke out.

All the deceased or missing individuals hail from Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, and South 24 Parganas districts. Missing complaints have been filed for 20 people since the fire broke out. Later, it was learned that 16 of them were missing.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, accused the Trinamool government of insensitivity and lack of coordination in disaster management during such a major fire. "Ministers, senior government and police officials are enjoying their Republic Day holiday, having no concern for the poor. The sooner this government goes, the better," he added.

"This is not the time to politicise a human tragedy," Biswar remarked in Adhikari's comment.

Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose on Monday evening said rescue operations were underway and teams were working to douse lingering pockets of fire across different floors of the gutted structures.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: India and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have called for urgent reform of the UN Security Council, warning that mounting global challenges are straining the credibility and effectiveness of the world body. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, P Harish, said that meaningful reform must include the addition of permanent members to ensure the effective enforcement of the international rule of law. He was speaking at the Security Council’s high-level open debate on Reaffirming International Rule of Law. Mr. Harish said lack of effectiveness in addressing global conflicts remain major shortcomings, seriously testing the credibility of the United Nations.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that in many parts of the world, the rule of law is being replaced by what he described as the law of the jungle. He said it was imperative to reform the Security Council without delay. Mr. Guterres underlined that the Security Council is the only UN body whose decisions are legally binding on all member states. He said no other body or ad-hoc coalition has the authority to mandate compliance on matters of peace and security. Referring the UN Charter, he said the Council alone can authorise the use of force, giving it a singular and universal responsibility.

He noted that while the world has undergone profound changes in power dynamics, demographics and the nature of global challenges over the past eight decades, the Security Council remains anchored in a bygone era. He called for comprehensive reform, including expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories. He emphasised that reform is essential to enhance the representation and effectiveness of the Council.
 

CHENNAI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday addressed the Shikshapatri Dwishatabdi Mahotsav through a video message, marking 200 years of Lord Swaminarayan's Shikshapatri, and described the bicentenary as a moment of pride and spiritual significance for the nation.

Highlighting India's civilisational heritage, the Prime Minister said the country has always remained committed to the path of Jnanyoga, with the Vedas continuing to inspire humanity even after thousands of years. He noted that India's spiritual tradition evolved over time through the Upanishads, Puranas and other forms of oral and written transmission, shaped by saints and seers in line with the needs of different eras.

PM Modi said Lord Swaminarayan's life was deeply rooted in public education and service. He underlined that the Shikshapatri offered simple yet profound guidance for righteous living and continues to remain relevant in everyday life. "Lord Swaminarayan's life was a symbol of both spiritual practice and service," the Prime Minister said, adding that his followers today are actively engaged in initiatives dedicated to society, the nation and humanity.

The Prime Minister praised the Swaminarayan tradition for its contributions in areas such as education, healthcare, farmers' welfare and water conservation, calling these efforts a source of inspiration. He said the bicentenary celebrations provide an opportunity to reflect on the teachings of the Shikshapatri and assess how its ideals are being practised in contemporary times.

Linking spiritual values with national movements, PM Modi said campaigns such as Swadeshi, Swachhata and "Vocal for Local," are resonating across the country. He added that aligning such initiatives with the Shikshapatri bicentenary would make the celebrations even more meaningful.

The Prime Minister also urged greater participation in the Gyan Bharatam Mission, launched to preserve India's ancient manuscripts. He called upon enlightened organisations and spiritual institutions to cooperate in safeguarding the nation's ancient knowledge systems, saying this heritage forms a core part of India's identity.

PM Modi further referred to the ongoing Somnath Swabhiman Parv, noting that it commemorates a thousand-year journey from the first destruction of the Somnath temple to the present day. He appealed to people to join the celebrations and spread awareness about its significance.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that with the continued efforts of Lord Swaminarayan's followers, India's development journey would keep receiving spiritual blessings and inspiration. 
 

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM [Maha Media]:Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation as historic, claiming it signalled the end of what he termed decades of neglect by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), and marked the beginning of a new phase of development and governance in Kerala’s capital.

Addressing a public gathering in Thiruvananthapuram, the Prime Minister accused both political fronts of corruption and mismanagement, asserting that their alternating rule had failed to address fundamental challenges faced by the State.

“Both the LDF and UDF have driven Kerala into a cycle of corruption, mismanagement and appeasement politics. Though they use different flags and symbols, their political approach is almost identical—rampant corruption, lack of accountability and neglect of core issues,” PM Modi said.

He alleged that Thiruvananthapuram had long been deprived of basic infrastructure and civic facilities and said the BJP-led municipal administration had begun efforts to transform the city.

“For decades, both fronts neglected Thiruvananthapuram. Our team has already started working towards a developed city. The change that has long been overdue is finally on its way,” he said.

Drawing parallels with Gujarat, PM Modi said the BJP’s rise in Kerala resembled its early political journey in his home State.

“Before 1987, the BJP was a marginal party in Gujarat. In 1987, we won the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for the first time. Our journey began in one city, and similarly, in Kerala, our beginnings have started with Thiruvananthapuram,” he said.

Projecting the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as an alternative to the LDF and UDF, he said Kerala’s political landscape had long been dominated by two fronts whose governance had left persistent challenges unresolved.

“There is now a third alternative that prioritises development and good governance,” he said.

The Prime Minister also accused the LDF government of harming the traditions of the Sabarimala Temple and promised a comprehensive investigation into the alleged gold theft case if the BJP came to power in Kerala.

“The entire country has faith in Lord Ayyappa. The LDF government has damaged the traditions of Sabarimala. Reports of gold theft have emerged. If a BJP government is formed, there will be a thorough investigation and the culprits will be punished,” he said.

The Sabarimala case relates to allegations of misappropriation of about 4.54 kg of gold from temple artefacts during refinishing work in 2019. The controversy traces back to a 1998 donation of gold and copper by industrialist Vijay Mallya, with subsequent inspections revealing discrepancies in the use of the donated material.

PM Modi also alleged that corruption under the LDF government had affected Kerala’s development and financial institutions, referring to cooperative bank-related cases.

“Corruption has hampered development in Kerala. The hard-earned money of the poor and middle class has been looted. Give BJP an opportunity, and we will recover every rupee,” he said.

The Prime Minister described the BJP’s win in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation as a milestone in Kerala’s political landscape.

“This victory is historic and unprecedented. It lays the foundation for the BJP in Kerala and reflects the people’s aspiration for good governance and development,” he said.

BJP leader VV Rajesh was elected Mayor of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation on December 26, marking the party’s first-ever control of a municipal corporation in Kerala. He secured 51 votes, while UDF candidate KS Sabarinathan received 17 votes and LDF candidate RP Shivaji got 29. GS Asha Nath was elected Deputy Mayor.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi flagged off four new trains, including three Amrit Bharat Express services, and inaugurated multiple development projects in Thiruvananthapuram. He also laid foundation stones for several infrastructure initiatives in the city.
 

BHUBANESWAR [Maha Media]: The Odisha government has imposed a complete ban on all products containing tobacco or nicotine, in compliance with the directive of the Supreme Court, the State Health & Family Welfare Department said in a notification.

Notably, the state government had prohibited the manufacture, storage, sale and distribution of gutkha and panmasala containing tobacco or nicotine on January 3, 2013. However, the Supreme Court observed in 2016 that manufacturers are selling pan masala (without tobacco), with flavoured chewing tobacco in separate but often conjoined sachets, so that consumers can buy both to mix and eat them.

Following this, the apex court directed all states to ensure total compliance with the ban imposed on the manufacturing and sale of gutkha and pan masala with tobacco and/or nicotine.

The Odisha health department on Wednesday issued a fresh notification, banning the manufacture, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution and sale of all products containing tobacco or nicotine as ingredients, whether sold in one product, or though separate products.

“The prohibition extends to all food products, whether chewable or otherwise, which are either flavoured or scented or mixed with any additives,” read the order.

Now, all food products, whether going by the name or form of gutkha, pan masala, flavoured or scented food products or chewable food products by whatever name, are completely banned in the state.

Referring to the International Agency for Research on Cancer under the WHO, the notification said chewing tobacco products such as zarda, khaini, gutka and processed, scented or flavoured tobacco are classified as cancer-causing substances.

Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling said the district drugs inspectors will conduct enforcement activities to ensure compliance with the ban order.
 

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a massive road show in this capital city of poll-bound Kerala.

The road show was organised from the Thampanoor overbridge to the Putharikandam Maidan, where the PM will launch various projects and flag off new trains.

Following that, he will also address around 25,000 workers who are expected to be gathered there to greet him.
 

DHAR [Maha Media]: The Basant Panchami puja began at the 11th-century Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque complex in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district in the early hours of Friday under a heavy security cover, as faithfuls gathered in large numbers for worship at the disputed site.

Around 8,000 police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the city to prevent any untoward incident, as the Hindu festival and Friday prayers of the Muslim community have fallen on the same day.

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a specific time-sharing formula to prevent communal friction, ruling that the Hindu community will be permitted to perform prayers from sunrise to sunset, and the Muslim side will be allowed to offer namaz between 1 pm and 3 pm.

Devotees began gathering at the historic site, decked in saffron flags and flowers, at sunrise.

Members of the Bhoj Utsav Samiti, a local organisation, began the puja by installing an image of Goddess Saraswati, also known as Maa Vagdevi, amidst chanting of Vedic mantras, and the ‘Akhand Puja’ (a continuous sequence of prayers from sunrise to sunset) was initiated by offering oblations in the ‘havan kund’.

Security personnel have covered every corner of the disputed complex.

The Hindu community’s prayers are proceeding smoothly amid tight security arrangements, District Magistrate Priyank Mishra said.

“We have made arrangements to ensure that prayers of both the Hindu and Muslim sides can be conducted without any interruption,” he said.

While Mishra did not disclose the number of people who will be gathering for namaz at noon, he said that they have been given alternative places to pray.

Superintendent of Police Mayank Awasthi said that the entire city has been mapped and sensitive areas have been identified.

He said that the disputed complex has been divided into six sectors, while the city has been divided into seven zones, and every street is being monitored.

Drones and CCTV cameras are also being used to scan the area, he added.

Awasthi said that social media is also being monitored to prevent the spread of any inflammatory messages.

Meanwhile, as the day progressed, the number of Hindu devotees at the disputed complex began to increase.

“We are delighted. We made grand preparations for the Basant Panchami puja. We are grateful to the Supreme Court for allowing Akhand Puja at Bhojshala,” Ashok Jain, a patron of the Bhoj Utsav Samiti, told reporters.

He said that namaz won’t be offered at the site of the puja, as the district administration has made separate arrangements for it.

Sarika Sharma, who attended the puja with her family, said, “We are happy to get the darshan of Goddess Saraswati on Basant Panchami day. We want a permanent solution to the Bhojshala issue soon.” The Hindu community considers Bhojshala to be a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, while the Muslim community refers to the monument as the Kamal Maula Mosque. The complex is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The ASI issued an order on April 7, 2003, which allows Hindus to worship at Bhojshala every Tuesday, while Muslims are permitted to offer prayers on Fridays.
 

PUNE [Maha Media]: IndiGo flight 6E 2608 from Delhi to Pune received bomb threat information upon arrival at the airport here on Thursday evening, though nothing suspicious was detected after thorough checks, officials said.

"The aircraft, scheduled to arrive at 8:40 pm, landed at 9:24 pm and was parked at Bay No. 3 at 9:27 pm. Subsequently, Air Traffic Control (ATC) communicated the bomb threat information to Apron Control. The aircraft was then moved to the isolation bay. Apron Control immediately alerted all concerned agencies, and the Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) was convened," an official said.

Following the assessment, the aircraft was thoroughly checked by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), the official said, adding no suspicious or adverse findings were detected.

"Upon completion of the procedures, the aircraft was cleared and released for normal operations. The situation was handled in a coordinated and timely manner, and no further incident was reported," the official added.

In a statement, IndiGo said, soon after landing, a security threat was noticed onboard IndiGo flight 6E 2608 operating from Delhi to Pune.

"Following the established protocol, we informed the relevant authorities immediately and are fully cooperating with them in following the standard operating procedures. All our customers and crew disembarked safely. We remain committed towards the safety and security of our customers, crew and aircraft," said the statement.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said India must secure a trade deal with the United States of America that puts Indian businesses and workers first and asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must not allow his "own weakness" to impact the economy any further.

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha shared a video on X of his recent visit to a garment factory in Haryana.

In a post on X accompanying the video, Gandhi said, "50 per cent US tariffs and uncertainty are badly hurting India’s textile exporters. Job losses, factory shutdowns and reduced orders are a reality of our 'Dead Economy'."

"Mr Modi has offered no relief or even spoken about tariffs, even though more than 4.5 crore jobs and lakhs of businesses are at stake. Modi ji, you are accountable; please direct your attention to this matter!" he said, using the hashtag TINA -- 'There is No Accountability'.

Gandhi also posted the video on YouTube and wrote a post accompanying it. He stated: "Modi ji, you are accountable; please direct your attention to this matter!" Gandhi said in an obvious swipe at the PM with a play on US President Donald Trump's often-repeated phrase in social media posts --"Thank you for your attention to this matter".

"India's textile industry is the second largest employer in our economy – our textiles are loved worldwide, and the craftsmanship of our tailors is truly unparalleled. Yet today, this industry is facing deep uncertainty and fear because of US tariffs," the Congress leader said.

"With 50 per cent tariffs in the US, falling prices in Europe, and fierce competition from Bangladesh and China, our garment and textile exporters are facing pressure from all sides," he said.

This is having a direct impact on jobs – units are closing, procurement is decreasing, and there is widespread turmoil across the entire sector, Gandhi said.

"Mr Modi has offered no relief or even spoken about tariffs, even though more than 4.5 crore jobs and lakhs of businesses are at stake," he said.

"During my recent visit to a garment factory in Haryana, I witnessed firsthand the skill of our tailors and the resilience and ambition of our people – they simply need a government that provides them with genuine support," Gandhi said.

He stressed that it is imperative that India secures a US trade deal that puts Indian businesses and Indian workers first.

"PM Modi must not allow his own weakness to impact our economy any further," Gandhi added.

In the video, Gandhi visits various sections of the textile factory and interacts with workers and executives working there. He also tries his hand at cutting cloth.

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: A "three-dimensional chess" was being played during Operation Sindoor, when the Indian forces were fully prepared for multiple actions to "dominate" the complete escalation ladder, Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi said on Thursday.

In his address at the launch of the book, 'Redlines Redrawn - Operation Sindoor and India's New Normal' here, he also said the information domain saw a "series of coordinated actions, well planned and put into place, even before the first weapon was fired.

"'Op Sindoor'... was given to me, if I remember, on the 29th or 30th of April. But it was not put out in the media", he added, without elaborating.

"And as you are aware, the tweet -- 'Justice is served' had huge record hits on Twitter (now X). Today as we speak, it's nearly 23 million. The IW (info-warfare) was credible, consistent, and to a plan, which was unveiled in a sequential manner," the General said.

Operation Sindoor was carried out by the Indian armed forces in the early hours of May 7 last year, eliminating at least 100 terrorists in response to the horrific Pahalgam terror attack of April that killed 26 innocent civilians.

"#PahalgamTerrorAttack Justice is Served. Jai Hind!" the Indian Army had posted on X at 1:51 am on May 7, shortly after the operation was launched.

At the event, referring to the operation, he said, in the military domain, "we all know of the actions and reactions on both sides".

"A three-dimensional chess was being played, where we had war-gamed our actions in-house with our red teams, and were fully prepared for multiple actions to dominate the complete escalation ladder," the Army chief said.

Operation Sindoor also showed that the jointness is "no longer something we aspire" to do in seminars or discussions, he underlined.

"It is something we practised under pressure and we came out as a successful synergistic organisation," the General said.

He said tactical ups and downs would happen during the conduct. However, a "wholesome positive end-state based on initial aims is what segregates a very successful mission from a not-so-successful one. And I can say proudly, Op Sindoor was the most successful operation", the General added.

The Army chief further said the "old assumption" that India requires a "long time for decision-making", as also a long drawn mobilisation cycle to synchronise force application, was "quietly etched out of the window".

"And one could say that the adversary discovered that India's decision-making loop has become shorter, while there's become longer and incoherent," he added.

The same was true for pre-positioning and calibrated mobilisation of the ground forces, the general said.

The economic domain saw a slew of actions by the government which "enabled us before, during and even after the operations".

"However, we have to be careful, with our supply chains and built-in resilience through Atmanirbharta, which is the only solution for the long run. Dynamic response system may be a heavy response system next time. From a short-duration war, it may be a heavy long-duration war," he said.

Gen Dwivedi asserted that there was "the troika of academia, industry and military", which was "truly synergised" in all manners.

Equipment was provided to the force and they said not to worry about the cost, "we will discuss after Op Sindoor", he said.

Together these perspectives in DIME (diplomatic, informational, military, and economic), reflect the reality that "modern conflict is no longer confined to in a single domain. It's simultaneous, integrated and continuous, basically a whole-of-nation approach", he said.

So apart from Operation Sindoor, the book also covers the entire arc from 1989 to Uri and Balakot judiciously. From assumed restraint to calibrated response to the present phase where responses are "dynamic, domain-agnostic and no longer predictable", the General said.

"We are no longer debating whether to respond, but how to shape responses without being boxed into pre-declared templates," he said.

Earlier in his address, he also took note of the multi-party delegations which were sent to various countries by India after the military action to convey to them the country's stand of "zero tolerance for terrorism".

"More importantly, visits by all-party delegations to various countries on Operation Sindoor vindicated the responsibility with which India conceptualised, conducted, calibrated and communicated about operation," the Army chief said.

On information warfare, he said, there were actions in this domain, from both sides, "but the winner in the long run was the one whose narrative was based on truth and backed with credible evidence".

"As they say, seeing is believing, and the world saw on their TV screens how the nine targets were destroyed in a synergistic manner, that all three forces were involved in it through 22 minutes of precision, non-escalatory strikes, and of course, followed by images, later on, of the damaged airfields or equipment on ground," he said.
 

JAIPUR [Maha Media]: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat said that India should teach the world dignity through its actions, not just through speeches or books.

Sangh's Sarsanghchalak said that while knowledge from books and speeches is important, true learning comes from how one conducts oneself, a principle that remains eternal, though times have changed.

Addressing the gathering in Maryada Mahotsav at Chhoti Khatu town of Didwana-Kuchaman district, Bhagwat on Thursday said, "It is India's job to teach dignity to the world. Teach them this not through speeches or books but through their conduct. There is knowledge in books and people hear speeches, but this doesn't complete the process. How one should conduct oneself and how one should be is eternal. This was told once, a thousand years ago, and this will continue even in the times ahead. But the situation was different a thousand years ago. The situation is different today."

Bhagwat said that while the world remains unaware, India's ancestors understood that despite differences, all people are connected, and living with this unity brings dignity, a principle he called 'Dharma.'

"The rest of the world did not get to know something important. Our ancestors did get to know of it. What is that? We might look different from each other, but in our foundation, we are one. That is why we might look different, but we are one - remember this. We are one means that everyone is ours. If everyone is ours, then dignity becomes part of the way of life all on its own...Life in this world goes on simultaneously. What keeps this going is called 'Dharma'. The rest of the world doesn't know this 'Dharma' because they don't know the truth behind this; our ancestors knew this," he said.

Earlier, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat said on January 18 that Dharma is the driving force behind all existence and governs the entire universe.

Addressing the event, 'Vihar Sevak Urja Milan', the RSS chief also reminded us that humans perform God's work but are not God."Those who abide by the truth on which religion is based are called saints. Therefore, it is the duty of all of us to ensure the respect and protection of saints. That is why the country's Prime Minister also says that I hesitate to say 'no' to saints. We should always keep in mind that we are doing the work of God, but we are not God," Bhagwat said.

Bhagwat further stated that Dharma guides all existence like fire burns and water flows, and as long as it steers India, the nation will remain a "Vishwaguru".

JAMMU [Maha Media]: Moderate to heavy snowfall was experienced in the high altitude areas across Jammu region, leading to the suspension of traffic on key roads, including Jammu-Srinagar national highway, and closure of schools in the hilly districts on Friday, officials said.

The Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop the Trikuta hills also witnessed the first snowfall of the season, forcing the authorities to suspend the yatra, while moderate rains lashed the plains, including Jammu city, bringing an end to a dry spell that had lasted for over two months.

As predicted by the meteorological department, it started snowing in the high altitude areas late Thursday evening, while intermittent rains lashed the plains, including Jammu city throughout the night, the officials said.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The Ministry of Culture is organising Parakram Diwas-2026 from today in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, marking the 129th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The celebrations will take place at 13 other locations across the country associated with the life and legacy of freedom fighter Bose. It also honours his enduring legacy of courage, sacrifice and patriotism.

The Ministry said the celebration will feature a cultural programme, exhibitions, and a theatrical performance by the National School of Drama. It further said that visitors will have the opportunity to experience a rich blend of island cuisines and explore a display of traditional handicrafts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The celebrations will continue till the 25th of this month. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary today, which is observed as Parakram Diwas, recalling the freedom fighter’s indomitable courage, unwavering resolve and unparalleled contribution to India’s freedom struggle. The Prime Minister said that Netaji’s fearless leadership and deep patriotism continue to inspire generations to work towards building a strong and self-reliant India.

Recalling his personal admiration for Netaji Bose, the PM referred to the launch of the e-Gram Vishwagram Yojana on January 23, 2009, describing it as a pioneering initiative aimed at transforming Gujarat’s IT landscape. He noted that the scheme was launched from Haripura, a place closely associated with Netaji Bose, and fondly remembered the warm reception and procession organised by the local people on the same road once travelled by the legendary leader. PM Modi also recalled a large programme organised in Ahmedabad in 2012 to mark Azad Hind Fauj Day, which was attended by several individuals inspired by Netaji Bose, including former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A. Sangma.

The Prime Minister said that for decades, the immense contribution of Netaji Bose did not align with the priorities of those in power, resulting in deliberate attempts to sideline his legacy. He emphasised that the approach has since changed, with sustained efforts being made to popularise Netaji Bose’s life and ideals. A major step in this direction, he said, was the declassification of files and documents related to Netaji Bose, allowing the nation to gain a deeper understanding of his role in India’s freedom movement.

Highlighting 2018 as a landmark year, the PM Modi recalled the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Azad Hind Government at the Red Fort, where he hoisted the Tricolour and interacted with INA veteran Lalti Ram. He also referred to the unfurling of the national flag in Srivijayapuram, formerly Port Blair, to mark the 75th anniversary of Netaji Bose hoisting the Tricolour there. On that occasion, three prominent islands were renamed, including Ross Island, which was renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep.

Prime Minister Modi noted that the Kranti Mandir museum at the Red Fort houses significant historical material related to Netaji Bose and the Indian National Army, including the cap worn by Netaji Bose, as part of efforts to preserve and deepen awareness of his historic contribution. He reiterated that Netaji Bose’s birth anniversary has been officially declared as Parakram Diwas and recalled his visit to Netaji Bhawan in Kolkata in 2021, from where Netaji made his historic escape.

Describing the installation of Netaji Bose’s grand statue near India Gate as a powerful symbol of shedding the colonial mindset, the Prime Minister said the statue stands as a mark of national reverence and will continue to inspire generations to come.

The parade rehearsal will start at 10:30 AM from Vijay Chowk and will proceed to Red Fort. The rehearsal will showcase India’s rich heritage, military prowess, and cultural diversity at Kartavya Path.

As the nation gears up for the big day, the rehearsal will offer a captivating preview of the celebrations to come. Different marching contingents of the Armed Forces and tableaux from different states will present glimpses of diverse strengths and cultural inclusiveness. Different fighter jets and aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) will also showcase a breathtaking aerial display over Kartavya Path.

According to the Delhi Police, the parade will start from Vijay Chowk and proceed to Red Fort through Kartavya Path, C-Hexagon, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Statue, Tilak Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, and Netaji Subhash Marg. The traffic police have advised people not to travel on these routes to avoid traffic jams. Delhi Metro rail services will be available for passengers during the rehearsal, and all stations are open to the public.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The hallowed portals of the Badrinath Dham will reopen to devotees on April 23, Manujendra Shah, the current titular Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal, said on Friday on the occassion of Basant Panchmi festival.

Speaking exclusively to news agency, he said, “Greetings to all the people of Uttarakhand and of the country. It’s a matter of pride to announce that this year, the gates of Badrinath Dham will reopen on April 23 at 6:15 am. The Gadu Ghada ceremony will be held on April 7.”

The opening date of Shri Badrinath Dham temple is announced annually on the auspicious day of Basant Panchami every year.

The date declaration is done from the royal court of Tehri Naresh in Narendra Nagar of Tehri Garhwal District.

This temple of Lord Vishnu has various rituals performed on the announcement day as well as the day of commencement of the temple’s pilgrimage season.

According to the Dham’s website, the announcement is followed by the Gadu Ghada ritual, the sacred sesame oil ceremony, which is specially extracted by devotees from the sesame seeds. The oil is then sent to the Badrinath temple via Rishikesh in a revered journey named “Tel Kalash yatra”.

On the day of the opening ceremony, the seat of lord Vishnu in the form of Badrinarayan is transferred from Narasimha Temple to Badrinath.

Acharya Krishnanand Nautiyal from the Narendra Nagar Royal Palace today said that the date and time have been finalised after carefully monitoring the astrological chart of Maharaj Manujendra Shah.

“Based on the astrological chart of Maharaj Manujendra Shah, the date and time decided for the opening of the portals of Badrinath Dham is April 23, 6:15 am. The gates of Lord Badrinath will be opened for general devotees. The sesame oil sent for the anointing ceremony of Lord Badri Vishal will arrive here on April 7th and will be processed under the supervision of the Maharani ji…” he said.

Earlier, after performing traditional rituals and prayers at the royal palace, the date for the opening of the portals of Badrinath Dham was formally announced.

Badarinath is one of the holy shrines for Vaishnavites among the 108 divya desams incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Badrinath town is also a part of the Panch Badri temples, including Yog Dhyan Badri, Bhavishya Badri, Adi Badri and Vriddha Badri, along with the Badrinath temple.

The temple is approximately 50 feet tall with a small cupola on top, covered with a gold gilt roof. The Badarinath temple is divided into three parts: the Garbha Griha or the sanctum sanctorum, the Darshan Mandap, where rituals are conducted and the Sabha Mandap, where pilgrims assemble.

At the Badarinath Mandir Gate, directly opposite the main Idol of Lord himself, is seated an idol of Bird Garud, the vehicle of Lord Badarinarayan. Garud is seen in a sitting position and in prayer with his hands folded. The walls and pillars of the mandapa are covered with intricate carvings.

The Garbha Griha portion has its canopy covered with a sheet of gold and houses Lord Badari Narayan, Kuber (God of wealth), Narad rishi, Udhava, Nar and Narayan. The complex has 15 idols.

Earlier, the portals of the world-famous eleventh Jyotirlinga, Kedarnath Dham, were ceremoniously closed for the winter season at 8:30 am on October 23, which coincided with Bhai Dooj (Kartik Shukla Saptami, Anuradha Nakshatra). 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The government has notified 33 questions that will be put to citizens during the first phase of the Census, starting April 1. The first phase of Census 2027 – houselisting operations – will take place during a 30-day period specified by each State and Union Territory between April 1 and September 30 this year. 
 
The enumerators will ask about the ownership status of the house, its use, the type of material used in flooring and roof, the number of rooms, and the sex of the head of the household during the survey. The enumerators will then ask about the use of the house, its condition, and the number of persons normally residing in the household. Officials will also collect information about the head of the household, like the name and sex, whether the head of the household belongs to the Scheduled Caste, the Scheduled Tribe or other communities and the ownership status. 
 
The citizens will also be asked about the basic facilities in their houses, like the main source of drinking water, main source of lighting, access to and type of latrine, wastewater outlet, availability of bathing facility, availability of kitchen and LPG and PNG connection and the main fuel used for cooking.
 
The enumerators will also collect information about radio and transistor, television, access to the Internet, gadgets like laptop, computer, telephone, mobile phone, smartphone, type of vehicle, main cereal consumed in the household and mobile number for census-related communication.
 
There will also be an option for self-enumeration to be conducted in a 15-day period just before the start of houselisting operations of 30 days.
 
The Census will be conducted in two phases – house-listing and housing census from April to September; and population enumeration in February 2027.

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on Friday offered talks with Ukraine to crack down on sanctions-busting after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy name-checked the island as a source of illicit missile components.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, semiconductor powerhouse Taiwan has successively updated export controls to stop high-tech goods being used for military purposes, and has joined in wide-ranging Western-led sanctions against Moscow.

Speaking in Davos on Thursday, Zelenskiy said Russia would not be able to produce missiles without “critical components sourced from China, Europe, the United States, and Taiwan”, showed excerpts published on the Ukraine president’s website.

Responding on his X account in English, Lai said Taiwan has long worked with global partners to “staunchly support Ukraine through humanitarian aid & coordinated sanctions”.

“We welcome further exchanges of information with President @ZelenskyyUa to further clamp down on illegal 3rd country transshipment & concealed end-use,” he said, posting a picture of orchids in the colour of Ukraine’s flag.

Lai said “there have been young Taiwanese who have sacrificed their lives to defend freedom in Ukraine,” referring to volunteer soldiers who have died fighting against Russia.

“We remain clear: any assistance to the aggressor or violations of int’l embargoes & export control regulations are unacceptable. We pray for peace to be restored to Ukraine soon.”

Speaking to reporters in Taipei later on Friday, Lai said he welcomed Zelenskiy to pass on any information to Taiwan about sanctions busting.

“We are willing to strengthen controls on goods that are routed through third countries while concealing their final destination, to prevent them from entering Russia and to protect Ukraine,” Lai added.

Reuters could not reach the Ukraine presidential office for comment outside of office hours.

In November, Taiwan said it was revising export controls to comply with the Wassenaar Arrangement, an international agreement aimed at preventing weapons proliferation, though diplomatically isolated Taiwan is not a signatory.

While senior Taiwan officials have spoken directly with some Ukrainian city mayors, there has been no publicly acknowledged direct contact between the two governments.

Taiwan and Ukraine do not have de facto embassies in each other’s capitals, and Taiwanese humanitarian aid to Ukraine has mostly been coordinated by Taiwan’s diplomatic offices in central and eastern Europe.

Taiwan has compared the Russian invasion of Ukraine to China’s military threat against an island it claims as its own. Taiwan’s government rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims.

Late last year, a senior Taiwanese military officer told a forum in Poland that if Russia defeats Ukraine it would embolden China in its behaviour towards Taiwan and that Taipei hoped Kyiv emerged victorious.
 

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew on Thursday an invitation for Canada to join his Board of Peace initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts.

Trump’s aboutface follows Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he openly decried powerful nations using economic integration as weapons and tariffs as leverage.

“Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post directed at Carney.

Neither Carney’s office nor the White House immediately responded to Reuters requests for comment on Thursday evening.

Last week, Carney’s office said he had been invited to serve on the board and planned to accept.

Carney received a rare standing ovation in Davos after the speech, in which he urged nations to accept the end of a rules-based global order.

Canada, which recently signed a trade deal with China, can show how “middle powers” might act together to avoid being victimized by American hegemony, he added.

Trump retorted that Canada “lives because of the United States,” and told listeners in Davos that Carney should be grateful for the United States’ previous largesse.

“Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements,” he added, addressing Carney directly.

The withdrawal of Canada’s invitation came hours after Trump officially launched the board, which was initially meant to cement a Gaza ceasefire.

Permanent members must help fund the board with a payment of $1 billion each, according to Trump.

“Once this board is completely formed, we can do pretty much whatever we want to do,” Trump said in Switzerland on Thursday. “And we’ll do it in conjunction with the United Nations.

The board’s establishment was endorsed by a United Nations Security Council resolution as part of Trump’s Gaza peace plan, and U.N. spokesperson Rolando Gomez said on Thursday that U.N. engagement with the board would only be in that context.

Member nations include Argentina, Bahrain, Morocco, Pakistan and Turkey. Other U.S. allies, such as Britain, France and Italy, have indicated they will not join for now.

PANAJI [Maha Media]: Newly appointed BJP president Nitin Nabin will be in Goa for a two-day visit from January 30, during which he will meet party leaders and workers.

Nabin took over as the BJP’s 12th national president, succeeding J P Nadda, earlier this week. The 45-year-old five-time MLA from Bihar is the youngest leader to be appointed to the top post in the saffron party.

Speaking to the news agency, Goa BJP chief Damodar Naik confirmed that Nabin will be in the coastal state on January 30 and 31.
 

BHUBANESWAR [Maha Media]: President Droupadi Murmu will undertake a six-day visit to Odisha from February 2, during which she will launch various development projects in her native Mayurbhanj district and attend the convocation ceremony of a university in Balasore, among other programmes.

Murmu will arrive in Bhubaneswar on the evening of February 2 and stay the night at the Lok Bhawan, an official statement said.

On February 3, she will visit Jajpur in the morning to offer prayers at Maa Biraja Temple, and then proceed to Balasore to attend the 12th convocation ceremony of Fakir Mohan University, it said.
 

MUMBAI [Maha Media]: The rupee gained 17 paise to trade at 91.41 against the US dollar in early deals on Friday, as investor sentiments improved after US President Donald Trump stepped back from tariff threats against Europe linked to Greenland, easing immediate trade-war fears.

Forex traders said Trump's softer rhetoric reduced near-term geopolitical anxiety. Moreover, as investors' risk appetite improved, the dollar corrected, allowing emerging market currencies -- including the rupee -- to recover slightly, they said.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 91.45 then gained ground to trade at 91.41 against the greenback, up 17 paise from its previous close.
