PM Modi condoles demise of Tamil scholar Gnanasundaram

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the passing of eminent Tamil scholar and litterateur D. Gnanasundaram, remembering him as a towering figure whose lifelong dedication greatly enriched Tamil culture, literature and scholarship.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Deeply pained by the passing of Thiru D. Gnanasundaram Ji. His contribution to Tamil culture and literature will always be remembered. Through his writings and lifelong dedication, he enriched the cultural consciousness of society. His works will continue to inspire generations of readers and scholars. I recall interacting with him during my visit to Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Tiruchirappalli in January 2024. His understanding of the Kamba Ramayanam was exceptional. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Gnanasundaram (84), a veteran Tamil pandit and former Vice President of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil Studies, passed away on January 25 at a private hospital in Chennai following age-related illness.

Prof. Gnanasundaram is survived by his wife Manimekalai and sons Senthan, Arunmozhi, and Madhavan.
