Nadal bows out in his last professional match

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]:  Rafael Nadal, one of tennis’s all-time greats, stepped onto the court for the final match of his illustrious career amidst an electrifying atmosphere at the Davis Cup Final 8 here on late Tuesday night. The 38-year-old, returning from a three-month competitive hiatus, was greeted by deafening cheers from a packed spectators of 11,300 fans in the iconic bullring. However, the day did not go as the Spanish faithful had hoped. In a bittersweet farewell, Nadal fell to Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-4 in the opening singles encounter of the quarterfinal tie. Despite a valiant effort, Spain’s hopes of advancing were dashed as they succumbed 2-1 to the Netherlands.

Nadal, who has claimed 22 Grand Slam titles and two Olympic gold medals over a glittering career, was visibly emotional as he entered the court to thunderous applause. The spectators cheered each year of his Grand Slam triumphs as it was announced over the stadium speakers, and tears filled the Mallorcan’s eyes during the Spanish national anthem. "It’s in some ways good if that was my last match. That probably was my last match if nothing happens," Nadal said in the post-match press conference. "I lost my first match in the Davis Cup, and I lost my last one. So we close the circle." The match itself was a challenge for Nadal, who admitted to struggling with form and fitness after his extended absence from the circuit. Van de Zandschulp, unfazed by the partisan fans, delivered a composed performance, breaking Nadal’s serve early in both sets.

"I knew it could be my last match as a professional, and the emotions were difficult to manage," Nadal reflected. "When you’ve spent so much time out of competition, everything is decided by small details." Despite the loss, the Spanish fans rallied behind their hero, chanting "Yes, you can!" and celebrating every point he won.
