Monsoon reaches south Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands: IMD
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The southwest monsoon advanced into parts of the south Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands and some areas of the north Andaman Sea on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said.
The weather department said moderate to heavy rainfall lashed Nicobar Islands over the past two days.
The strength and depth of westerly winds over the south Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea increased in this period, with wind speeds exceeding 20 knots at 1.5 km above sea level and extending up to 4.5 km in some areas.
According to IMD observations, the region experienced persistent rainfall activity, showing the monsoon’s progression.
Meteorological data indicated a continuous strengthening and deepening of westerly winds over the past 48 hours, with wind speeds at 1.5 km above mean sea level exceeding 20 knots and the influence of these winds extending up to 4.5 km in altitude.
Another key indicator, the Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR), has also shown a marked decrease, dropping over the last two days-a signal consistent with active monsoon conditions.
With these meteorological criteria met, the IMD declared the southwest monsoon’s advance into the region today. “Southwest Monsoon is very likely to advance into South Andaman Sea, some parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands around 13th May, 2025,” the IMD stated in its latest release.
The early onset is notable, as the monsoon typically reaches the Andaman Sea around May 18-19 and the Indian mainland by June 1. This year, forecasts indicate the monsoon may arrive in Kerala by May 27, nearly a week ahead of schedule.
