JPC to hold key meet on One Nation, One Election

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on One Nation, One Election will hold its sixth meeting on Wednesday, during which prominent economists NK Singh and Dr. Prachi Mishra will share their perspectives on the proposed constitutional reforms.

NK Singh is the former chairman of the 15th Finance Commission, while Dr. Mishra is an economics professor and heads the ISAC Center for Public Policy at Ashoka University.

The JPC, chaired by BJP MP PP Chaudhary, is a 39-member panel constituted to deliberate on the 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which proposes simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

In the committee’s previous (fifth) meeting on July 11, former Chief Justices JS Khehar and DY Chandrachud, and former Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law and Justice chairman EMS Nachiyappan, presented their legal views.

Former CJI Justice DY Chandrachud endorsed the bill, stating that the proposal does not violate the basic structure of the Constitution, though he noted that some provisions related to the Election Commission’s powers require detailed discussion. He stated that changes to Assembly terms should be approved by Parliament and not the Election Commission.
