Campaigning for Kerala, Assam, Puducherry Assembly election to end
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The public campaigning for the assembly polls scheduled for April 9 in Kerala, Puducherry, and Assam will end on Tuesday. The Election Commission has announced a 'silence period' for election-bound states and UTs, which will start at 5 pm on Tuesday. This time is exactly 48 hours before the end of voting in all constituencies, scheduled for April 9.
According to Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, there will be a complete ban on election campaigning during this period. Hence, the candidates will not be able to do public meetings, processions, rallies, public relations, or any other activity.
Additionally, the EC has also banned election campaigning through electronic and social media platforms. Asking for votes through bulk SMS, phone calls or online platforms will also be prohibited.
The measures, issued to ensure free and fair elections, will come into effect 48 hours prior to the close of polling, with the aim of enabling voters to exercise their franchise without fear or influence, Kerala Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr Rathan U Kelkar said a day ago.
