Canadian PM begins 4-Day India visit today

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in India on Thursday as part of a broader February 27–March 7 tour that also includes Australia and Japan.

His four-day India visit is aimed at strengthening partnerships in trade, energy, technology and defence, while reducing Canada’s economic dependence on the United States.

This is Carney’s first visit to India since assuming office in March 2025 and comes after a period of strained diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Carney will reach New Delhi on March 1 and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 2.

A key agenda item is the formal relaunch of negotiations on the long-pending Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which was stalled amid diplomatic tensions.

The two sides are targeting a conclusion of CEPA within 12 months and aim to increase bilateral trade to $50–70 billion by 2030.

Before arriving in Delhi, Carney will meet business leaders in Mumbai to encourage greater Canadian investment in sectors such as infrastructure, clean energy, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing.
