Canadian PM Mark Carney to visit India from tomorrow
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to depart for India on Thursday morning as part of a three-nation visit aimed at strengthening Canada’s trade, investment and strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.
According to an official statement from the Prime Minister of Canada’s office, Carney will travel to India, Australia and Japan from February 26 to March 7. The visit will focus on expanding cooperation across key sectors including trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence and defence.
During his India visit, Carney will travel to Mumbai and New Delhi, where he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to elevate and expand Canada–India relations, with emphasis on new partnerships in trade, clean energy, technology, artificial intelligence, talent development, culture and defence cooperation.
Carney will also hold meetings with business leaders to identify investment opportunities in Canada and encourage partnerships between Indian and Canadian companies. This will be his first visit to India after assuming office following Justin Trudeau.
India is Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner in goods and services. According to Canadian government data, bilateral trade between the two countries stood at nearly USD 31 billion in 2024. During the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit, the two sides agreed to formally launch negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, aimed at increasing two-way trade to USD 70 billion by 2030.
Following his India visit, Carney will travel to Australia, where he will meet Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to deepen cooperation in defence and maritime security, critical minerals, trade and advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence. He is also scheduled to address both Houses of the Australian Parliament, marking the first such address by a Canadian Prime Minister in nearly two decades.
The Canadian Prime Minister will then visit Japan, where he will meet Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening investment ties and partnerships in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, critical minerals and food security, along with cooperation on security and defence in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific.
In a statement, Carney said Canada is focused on diversifying its trade, attracting new international investment and building resilient partnerships abroad to support economic growth and prosperity at home.
