
Makar Sankranti celebrated in different parts of the country
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The Makar Sankranti festival is being observed across the country today. This day is dedicated to Lord Surya. It is the day when Sun travels from Sagittarius to Capricorn. Makar Sankranti is also known as Uttarayan which means that the Sun moves towards the north.
With the onset of Uttarayan, the effect of cold also starts reducing gradually. The festival has different names in different parts of the country. It is celebrated as Pongal in Karnataka, Lohri in Punjab and Uttaryan, Maghi and Khichdi in some other parts of the country.
On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, devotees flocked to the ghats of Varanasi to take a holy dip in the river Ganga. On the early morning of Makar Sankranti, bathing is regarded as a sacred ritual that cleanses a person of his sins and gives good fortune and health.
The Kite Festival, also known as Makar Sankranti, is widely observed in India. Kite flying is a popular way for people to welcome spring.
Devotees and Naga Sadhus from different parts of the country also gathered at Kolkata's Babu Ghat to take a holy dip during the Gangasagar Mela, the largest fair after Kumbh, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.
At Sagar Island's southern edge in West Bengal, it attracts hundreds of devotees who come across to seek righteousness throughout the winter months of the year.
