Floods in 17 districts of UP, over 300 houses collapse
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Monsoon rains have triggered flood-like conditions across large parts of North India, severely affecting states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. In Bihar, hundreds of villages across districts such as Munger, Buxar, Purnia, Bhojpur, and Patna are underwater. Purnia recorded 270.6 mm of rainfall between Sunday and Monday—the highest in 38 years, only behind the 294.9 mm recorded in 1987.
In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, 13 districts including Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Kanpur are facing flood situations. Thousands of homes have been submerged in Prayagraj and Kashi, with the Ganga, Yamuna, and Betwa rivers flowing above the danger mark. In the past 24 hours, 12 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the state.
Himachal Pradesh continues to reel under heavy rainfall with 310 roads blocked due to landslides. In Shimla, landslides damaged three houses on Monday, though residents had evacuated in advance. The Chandigarh-Manali four-lane highway also remains shut. Meanwhile, in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, three people were swept away and killed in a river swollen by rain.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kerala, while orange alerts have been sounded in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry for Tuesday. Light to moderate rainfall is also expected in 19 other states including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Punjab.
