RS, LS adjourned for the day amid Oppn uproar

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day amid protests by the opposition demanding a discussion on the revision of Bihar electoral rolls.

The Lok Sabha began its proceedings on Tuesday with obituary references to the passing away of former MPs Tilakdhari Prasad Singh, Ram Rati Bind, and Shibu Soren. The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day due to vociferous protests by opposition parties demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise carried out by the Election Commission in Bihar and other issues. As the protests intensified, the speaker said the opposition was not listening to him and continuing their protests despite his repeated appeals. However, the opposition ignored the speaker's pleas, forcing him to adjourn the House till 2 pm after about 25 minutes of business. When the House reconvened at 2 pm, the protests by the opposition party members continued forcing the chair to adjourn the proceedings for the day.

Congress and other Opposition parties created uproar in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, alleging CISF personnel were deployed in the House last week, an assertion vehemently rejected by both the Chair and the government, saying the personnel belonged to parliamentary security services.

Protests by Congress and other Opposition parties during the morning session (Zero Hour) led to the adjournment of the proceedings till 2 pm. Soon after the listed papers and reports were tabled during the Zero Hour (morning session), Deputy Chairman Harivansh rued that the Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, had shared a letter written to him with the media. In the letter on Friday, Kharge stated that CISF personnel were deployed in the House and were preventing Opposition leaders from exercising their democratic rights.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju sought clarification from the Chair on what action needs to be taken against wrong claims being made by the Leader of Opposition (LoP). "Only marshals can enter the House. That day, there were only marshals. Amid uproar, the proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm. Earlier, the Chair rejected 34 adjournment notices under Rule 267 of the House. When the Upper House resumed proceedings at 2 pm, the opposition members protested, demanding a discussion on the electoral roll revision in Bihar, leading to the adjournment of the House for the day.

Barring discussions on Operation Sindoor in both Houses, Parliament has seen little business since the Monsoon session began on July 21. There have been repeated adjournments initially due to the opposition's demand for a discussion on Operation Sindoor and then on the SIR in Bihar. The session is scheduled to continue until August 21.
