Jaishankar highlights global south concerns at G7 FMM

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has underscored the importance of freedom of navigation for global economic security during the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in France.

During the deliberations, Jaishankar emphasised the urgent need to reform the United Nations system. He highlighted that global institutions must evolve to become more representative, inclusive, and effective in addressing contemporary challenges. India reiterated its long-standing position that decision-making bodies must reflect current geopolitical realities rather than post-World War II structures.

In a social media post, Dr Jaishankar said that, at the meeting, he appreciated the ongoing steps to expand cooperation along its value chain on critical minerals and discussed the threat of narco-terror linkages. He noted that the Ministers discussed cross-cutting threats and sovereignty during the meeting.

A key highlight of Jaishankar’s intervention was the emphasis on the concerns of the Global South. He pointed out that developing nations are disproportionately affected by disruptions in energy supplies and rising costs. Ensuring equitable access to affordable energy remains a major challenge, particularly in the context of ongoing conflicts and economic instability.

Jaishankar also underlined the importance of building resilient and diversified supply chains to withstand geopolitical shocks. He noted that recent global crises, including conflicts and pandemics, have exposed vulnerabilities in existing systems. Strengthening supply chain resilience is essential for sustaining economic growth and ensuring stability in international trade.

Earlier, on the sidelines of the meeting,  the External Affairs Minister met United States State Secretary Marco Rubio and had productive talks on the sidelines of the meeting. During his meeting with his Saudi Arabian counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan, Dr Jaishankar appreciated Mr Farhan’s assessments on West Asia and also discussed bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The External Affairs Minister also met Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of European Commission Kaja Kallas, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Foreign Minister of Germany Johann Wadephul.

Jaishankar also held discussions with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, reviewing bilateral ties and exploring cooperation in sectors such as trade, agriculture, and critical minerals. The leaders also exchanged views on the evolving West Asia situation and its global ramifications, signalling the importance of coordinated international responses to emerging geopolitical challenges.
