PM Modi, King Abdullah II call for stronger ties

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Tuesday addressed the India-Jordan Business Forum in Amman, calling for stronger business-to-business engagement and greater economic cooperation between the two countries. The forum was attended by Crown Prince and Jordan’s Minister of Trade and Industry and Minister of Investment Hussein, along with business leaders from both sides.

Both leaders underlined the need to convert existing potential into tangible economic growth and prosperity. King Abdullah II said Jordan’s network of Free Trade Agreements, combined with India’s growing economic strength, could help create an economic corridor linking South Asia, West Asia and beyond.

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said India and Jordan share a strong contemporary partnership rooted in deep civilisational ties. He praised Jordan’s role as a regional bridge connecting markets and promoting trade and investment. The Prime Minister proposed doubling bilateral trade to USD 5 billion over the next five years.

Highlighting India’s position as the fastest-growing major economy, the Prime Minister said the country is on track to become the world’s third-largest economy. He invited Jordanian companies to invest in India and benefit from its large consumer market, expanding manufacturing base, and stable and transparent policy environment. He also said the two countries could work together as trusted supply-chain partners for global markets.

PM Modi pointed to opportunities for collaboration in digital public infrastructure, IT, fintech, health-tech and agri-tech, and encouraged startups from both countries to partner in these areas. He said India’s strengths in pharmaceuticals and medical devices, combined with Jordan’s strategic location, could help develop Jordan as a hub for West Asia and Africa.

The Prime Minister also highlighted cooperation potential in agriculture, cold chain, food parks, fertilisers, infrastructure, automobiles, green mobility, and heritage and cultural tourism. On sustainability, he suggested expanding collaboration in renewable energy, green financing, desalination and water recycling.

The forum saw participation from business leaders in sectors including infrastructure, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, fertilisers, agriculture, renewable energy, textiles, logistics, automobiles, defence and manufacturing. Representatives from FICCI and the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, which have an existing MoU to promote trade and economic cooperation, were also part of the delegation.
