PM Modi greets nation on Makar Sankranti, Magh Bihu, Uttarayan

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday greeted the nation on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, a harvest festival celebrated in different parts of the country as per local traditions and customs.

Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun in the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makar), celebrated as a mid-winter harvest festival.

“This sacred occasion of Sankranti is celebrated in various parts of the country according to local customs and traditions. I pray to Lord Surya for everyone’s happiness, prosperity, and excellent health,” Modi said in a post on X.

“Heartfelt greetings on the auspicious occasion of Uttarayan! May this sacred festival of Makar Sankranti fill your life with happiness, and may everyone be blessed with good health and well-being,” he said in a separate post on X.

“May this joyful celebration also strengthen bonds of togetherness and usher in prosperity and positivity for all,” the prime minister said.

Modi also extended greetings on the occasion of Magh Bihu which is celebrated in Assam and parts of the Northeastern region.

“Magh Bihu celebrates the joy of harvest, abundance and togetherness. May this festival bring prosperity, good health and happiness to every home,” Modi said.

“May the spirit of gratitude and harmony continue to guide us towards a brighter and more prosperous future,” the prime minister said. 

Union Minister J.P. Nadda also wished the countrymen, saying, “I extend my heartfelt greetings to all fellow citizens on the sacred festival of Makar Sankranti, associated with righteousness, service and charity.”

“This enriching festival of Indian culture and traditions imparts a message of positivity, equality and dedication to society. May this holy festival bring health, prosperity and good fortune to everyone’s life; this is my prayer to Lord Surya,” he added.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also took to X and said, “Warm greetings on Makar Sankranti, Magh Bihu and Pongal. May the festivals bring well-being, peace and abundance for all.”

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta took to social media to extend heartfelt greetings on Makar Sankranti.

“This festival of Sankranti symbolises the wondrous harmony between nature and our eternal Sanatan culture, inspiring us towards altruism, virtuous deeds and noble resolutions. We pray to the Sun God that, by His boundless grace, our Delhi continues to advance on the path of progress, and may joy, health and prosperity permeate the life of every Delhiite,” she added.

The Festival of Harvest, Makar Sankranti, is being celebrated in different parts of the country today. Makar Sankranti signals the end of winter and the beginning of longer days. The festival is known with different names in different parts of the country. It is celebrated as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Uttarayan in Gujarat, Bhogali Bihu in Assam and Poush Sangkranti in West Bengal.
