PM Modi highlights decade of progress in Assam
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday underscored the developmental strides made in Assam over the past decade, asserting that the next phase would focus on making the state self-reliant and elevating its global profile.
Addressing a public rally in Barpeta, Modi contrasted the Bharatiya Janata Party’s long-term development approach with what he described as the short-term outlook of the Indian National Congress. He alleged that the Congress prioritised immediate gains at the cost of sustained progress, while the BJP remained committed to long-term nation-building.
Reflecting on the party’s tenure in the state, the prime minister said the past ten years had been dedicated to restoring peace, stability, and safeguarding Assam’s cultural identity. He added that the coming years would aim to boost economic growth, strengthen self-reliance, and position the state on the global stage.
Marking the foundation day of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Modi extended greetings to party workers and reiterated the organisation’s guiding principle of “Nation First”. He said the BJP remains focused on building a developed and self-reliant India and is seeking public support to continue its agenda.
Highlighting infrastructure and connectivity improvements, Modi said better transport networks have contributed to the growth of tourism in Assam. He also pointed to the state’s cultural and spiritual heritage, mentioning sites such as Kamakhya Temple and Manas National Park as key attractions drawing visitors.
The prime minister also announced a boost for local agriculture, stating that the region’s aromatic Joha rice would now find markets in Europe, benefiting farmers.
The prime minister will then address a rally at Hojai in central Assam for BJP candidate Shiladitya Dev. The prime minister's final rally is at Upper Assam's Dibrugarh for state minister Prasanta Phukan.
This would be the second time this election season that the prime minister would be in Assam for poll campaigning. He had campaigned in the state on April 1, addressing rallies at Gogamukh and Behali, and interacting with women tea garden workers in Dibrugarh.
Campaigning for the assembly polls in the state will end on Wednesday. Elections to 126 assembly constituencies in Assam will be held on April 9, with counting of votes on May 4.
