PM Modi pays tribute to PV Narasimha Rao on his birth anniversary
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao on his birth anniversary, saying India is grateful to him for his "effective leadership" during a crucial phase of its development trajectory.
His intellect, wisdom and scholarly nature are also widely admired, PM Modi said on X.
Rao's premiership during 1991-96 is considered the most defining period in the country's economic journey as, with India facing a serious balance of payment crisis, he unshackled the state control on economy and opened it to private players. This paved the way for a long era of growth better than what was seen in the past.
He was given the country's highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna, posthumously by the Modi government last year.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid tributes to Rao and said his government's far-reaching economic liberalisation policies were instrumental in catalysing an era of unprecedented national growth.
“We pay our tributes to Former Prime Minister, P. V. Narasimha Rao, on his birth anniversary. His government's far-reaching economic liberalisation policies were instrumental in catalysing an era of unprecedented national growth. These reforms were pivotal in the upliftment and expansion of the middle class, thereby laying a robust foundation for a more formidable and resilient India,” he wrote in a post on ‘X’.
“His tenure was also distinguished by significant advancements in India's nuclear program and the initiation of several forward-thinking foreign policy endeavours, most notably the 'Look East' policy. His vital role in progress and strengthening of our nation shall always be remembered,” he added.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also honoured Rao's legacy in a message on social media, calling him "a towering statesman and scholar par excellence."
"Remembering former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao Garu on his birth anniversary. His tenure as Prime Minister of India made notable contribution in far-reaching economic progress and national development,” he posted.
It is worth mentioning that Narasimha Rao was born on June 28, 1921, in Laknepalli village (now in Telangana), and came from a Telugu Niyogi Brahmin family.
A freedom fighter during India's struggle for independence, he became a full-time politician after independence, joining the Indian National Congress. He served as India's ninth Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996.
He was the first person from South India and only the second person from a non-Hindi-speaking background to become Prime Minister.
