SC to hear petitions challenging SIR today
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The Supreme Court will today hear petitions challenging the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Currently, the opposition continues to raise questions on the SIR process in states like Bihar, Kerala, and West Bengal, and has filed several petitions in the Supreme Court in the same matter.
These petitions raise questions related to the powers of the Election Commission, identification of citizenship, and the right to vote. A bench consisting of CJI Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi will be hearing the matter.
Earlier, during the hearing on January 6, the Election Commission had stated that it has full authority to conduct SIR. However, the EC said that it is its responsibility to ensure no foreign national remains on the voter list.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Monday sought a response from the Election Commission of India on petitions filed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs challenging the Election Commission's procedures related to SIR in West Bengal.
