SA wins first-ever double Super Over game vs Afghanistan
AHMEDABAD [Maha Media]: South Africa secured a dramatic win against Afghanistan in the ongoing men’s T20 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
The Proteas edged Afghanistan by four runs in a first-ever double Super Over in T20 World Cup history, strengthening their position in Group D.
South Africa made 23 in the second Super Over through David Miller and Tristan Stubbs. Afghanistan responded with 19, falling short despite Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s late assault.
Earlier, Afghanistan posted 17 in the first Super Over, with Azmatullah Omarzai striking two fours and a six with Gurbaz at the other end. South Africa looked down and out in the chase, needing 13 off the last three balls, but Stubbs produced a stunning finish, smashing 10 off the final three deliveries to level the Super Over and force a second.
The match had already been steeped in drama in the final over of regulation play. Kagiso Rabada dismissed Noor Ahmad with 13 required, but the delivery was called a no-ball, giving the batter a reprieve. Noor made South Africa pay with a six over deep square leg, bringing the equation down to five off four.
With one wicket left, Afghanistan needed two off three. But attempting a quick double to finish the game, Noor and Fazalhaq Farooqi were caught short, with Farooqi run out at the non-striker’s end, sending the contest into a Super Over.
Earlier, asked to bat by Rashid Khan, South Africa rode on half-centuries from Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton to post 187/6 in 20 overs.
