Trump imposes 35% tariff on Canada
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: US President Donald Trump has announced a 35% tariff on goods imported from Canada, effective August 1, 2025. The decision was conveyed in a letter sent to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday.
Trump cited the smuggling of fentanyl from Canada into the United States as the primary reason. He also pointed to Canadian tariff and non-tariff measures that he described as harmful to US trade.
“Fentanyl is not the only problem. Canada has various tariff and non-tariff policies that are against U.S. trade,” Trump wrote.
This follows a 25% tariff imposed by the US on certain Canadian imports in March 2025.
Trump warned that if Canada retaliates, the US will raise tariffs further.
