Sensex gains 326 points
MUMBAI [Maha Media]: Benchmark indices ended marginally higher on Friday, but well off their intra-day highs, as late-session volatility capped gains. The Sensex rose 326 points to close at 74,533, while the Nifty advanced 112 points to settle at 23,115.
Gains were broad-based, with market breadth favouring advances as the NSE advance-decline ratio stood at 3:2. The Midcap index outperformed, rising 363 points to end at 54,856. However, banking stocks lagged, with the Nifty Bank index slipping 24 points to 53,427 after paring nearly 2% from its intra-day highs.
Among sectors, IT emerged as the top gainer, with Tech Mahindra and LTIMindtree climbing over 3% each, supporting the index. Metal stocks also saw buying interest, with JSW Steel and Tata Steel among the top Nifty gainers, alongside Coal India and Infosys.
On the flip side, HDFC extended its previous session’s losses, falling over 2% and weighing on the benchmarks.
In stock-specific action, Tata Power rose 1% after signing a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Gujarat government for its Mundra power plant.
In the broader market, IOB, Aditya Birla Fashion, Tata Elxsi, Bank of Maharashtra, and Vodafone Idea were among the top midcap gainers.
Meanwhile, the Indian rupee remained under sharp pressure. It hit a record low of 93.76 against the US dollar during the session, marking a fall of 113 paise for the day. The currency has declined about 3% since February 27, when tensions in West Asia escalated, and is now the worst-performing Asian currency in 2026, down over 4% against the dollar.
On Thursday, the Sensex tanked 2,496.89 points, or 3.26 per cent -- its biggest single-day plunge since June 2024 -- to settle at 74,207.24. The Nifty tumbled 775.65 points, or 3.26 per cent, to end at 23,002.15.
