2nd grand Shahi Sawari of Lord Mahakal today

UJJAIN [Maha Media]: The ancient city of Ujjain will reverberate with chants of ‘Har Har Mahadev’ as the second Shahi Sawari of Lord Mahakal during the holy month of Shravan will take place on second Monday of Shravan on July 21. Thousands of devotees from across India and abroad thronged the city to witness the royal procession, which will showcase a vibrant mix of devotion, tradition and cultural splendor. 

The day will begin with special rituals at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple. In the afternoon, the idol of Lord Mahakal adorned in resplendent royal attire placed on a silver palanquin will be given a guard of honour at the temple’s main gate. The procession will commence around 4 pm, traversing its traditional route through Mahakal Chauraha, Gudri Chauraha, Bakshi Bazaar, Kaharwadi and Ramghat. At Ramghat, the sacred idol will be bathed in the holy water of Shipra River, an age-old ritual symbolising purification and prosperity.  

The Shahi Sawari will not just be a spiritual event but also a cultural spectacle. Folk performers, tribal dance troupes and Vedic chanting groups, accompanied the procession, will be adding a festive aura to the sacred journey. Streets along the route are decorated with flowers, rangolis, and colourful banners, while local residents distributed free food and water to devotees.

Devotees expressed their gratitude towards the arrangements, describing the event as both deeply spiritual and flawless. The Mahakal procession will be taken out six times. The first  procession was held on July 14, second on July 21, third on July 28, fourth on August 4, fifth on August 11 and the sixth on August 18. The Shahi Sawari is held every Monday during the month of Shravan, with the final and most elaborate procession scheduled after the month’s conclusion. 

Monday’s event will mark the second in the series of six processions planned this season.
