8th suicide in Bengal over SIR, says TMC

KOLKATA [Maha Media]: The controversy over Special Intensive Revision (SIR), or in simple terms, voter list verification, in West Bengal is showing no signs of abating. Now, a person in South 24 Parganas district has committed suicide fearing his name would be removed from the voter list. The deceased, Safikul Gazi, had been living at his in-laws' house in Bhangar for the past few months.

Family members said that he was in panic after the special intensive revision began. Gazi feared that he would be expelled from the country due to not having a valid identity card. The Trinamool Congress called this the 8th suicide related to SIR and accused the BJP of spreading fear.

A faction of the Matua community, led by TMC MP Mamata Bala Thakur, started an indefinite hunger strike in Thakurnagar, demanding unconditional citizenship for all refugees from Bangladesh. BJP leader Shantanu Thakur called it vote politics, while TMC continues to oppose CAA.

CM Pinarayi Vijayan announced that the government would challenge the SIR process in the Supreme Court. All parties except BJP supported this move. Opposition leader VD Satheesan said that they are also ready to become a party with the government in court.
