
First day of Sawan, Kanwar Yatra begins
UJJAIN [Maha Media]: Today marks the first day of the holy month of Sawan, and devotees thronged Shiva temples across the country to offer prayers and seek blessings. The onset of Sawan saw spiritual fervour and religious rituals in full swing.
In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple was specially adorned for the occasion. Thousands of devotees gathered since early morning to offer water, milk, and belpatra to Lord Shiva.
Meanwhile, at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, the day began with a Panchamrit Abhishek — a ceremonial bath of the Shivling with five sacred substances: milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar.
On the occasion, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav attended took part in the Kawad Yatra.
Along with other prominent figures, including Mahamandaleshwar Uttam Swami and several saints, the Chief Minister performed the ritual of offering prayers and lifting the Kawad.
The holy month of Shravan began on Friday and will continue for 30 days, with 4 Shravan Mondays (Somvar) this year. It is estimated that over 8 million devotees will visit Ujjain during this period to seek blessings from Lord Mahakaleshwar.
On the first day, Friday, the temple doors were opened at 3 am for the Bhasma Aarti. Thousands of devotees gathered early in the morning for darshan. Devotees will continue to visit throughout the day until the Shayan Aarti.
The Lord was beautifully adorned with silver ornaments, a crescent moon, trident (Trishul), crown, and various ornaments. He was decorated with bhang (herbal offering), sandalwood, and dry fruits, followed by the traditional application of holy ash (Bhasma).
