JPC meeting on One Nation-One Election underway
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: A crucial meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill for One Nation-One Election is underway at Parliament House.
Former chief justices of India, J S Khehar and D Y Chandrachud, are interacting with the parliamentary committee scrutinising the simultaneous election bill as it held its eighth sitting.
Senior leaders, including Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, BJP MPs Anurag Thakur, Sambit Patra, and other members of the committee have arrived to participate in the meeting.
The 39-member JPC, chaired by former Union Minister P.P. Chaudhary, has been formed to deliberate on the bill and collect expert opinions. So far, the committee has conducted four meetings to discuss the bill’s provisions and implications.
In a previous meeting held on March 26, Attorney General R. Venkataramani, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court D.N. Patel, and other legal experts attended the session. According to sources, the Attorney General stated that the proposed legislation requires no constitutional changes and that simultaneous elections do not affect the basic structure of the Constitution, making the bills legally sound.
