India–Brazil partnership amplifies Global South’s voice: PM Modi
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said closer cooperation between India and Brazil enhances the collective voice of the Global South on the world stage, while underlining the need to reform international institutions to better respond to present-day challenges.
Addressing a joint press conference with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the national capital, Modi said the partnership between the two democracies has been impactful globally and would continue to advance shared priorities of developing nations.
“When India and Brazil act together, the Global South speaks with greater strength and confidence,” the prime minister said, adding that both countries are committed to promoting dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means to resolve conflicts. He noted that the two sides were united in their view that terrorism and its backers pose a threat to all humanity.
Modi also stressed that reforming global governance institutions was essential to meet contemporary realities, and said New Delhi and Brasília would work jointly towards that goal.
Highlighting sectoral cooperation, the prime minister said collaboration in climate-resilient agriculture, precision farming and biofertilisers would bolster food security in both countries. He described the agreement on critical minerals and rare earth elements as a significant step towards building resilient supply chains, while noting steady progress in defence cooperation based on mutual trust and strategic alignment.
“There is vast scope to deepen ties in health and pharmaceuticals as well, including increasing the supply of affordable, high-quality medicines from India to Brazil,” Modi said.
He added that discussions with President Lula were aimed at advancing cooperation across sectors, with both sides setting an ambitious target of taking bilateral trade beyond USD 20 billion over the next five years.
The prime minister thanked the Brazilian leader for attending the Global AI Impact Summit and praised his role in giving fresh momentum to India–Brazil relations.
Earlier in the day, Modi and Lula held delegation-level talks, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, and senior officials present.
President Lula, who is on a state visit to India, was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he was received by Modi and President Droupadi Murmu. He also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.
Lula’s visit comes months after Modi travelled to Brasília in July 2025, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Brazil in over five decades. The Brazilian president is accompanied by a large delegation, including top business leaders expected to take part in a bilateral business forum.
