India prepares for Vice-President election tomorrow

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Voting to elect India’s next Vice President will take place on Tuesday, September 9, with results to be declared the same evening.

The new Vice President will replace Jagdeep Dhankhar, who resigned suddenly on July 21, leaving the post vacant for nearly 50 days.

The contest will be between NDA’s candidate, Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, and INDIA bloc’s nominee, retired Supreme Court judge Sudarshan Reddy.

While NDA enjoys a numerical advantage in both Houses of Parliament, opposition strength makes the election more competitive than in the past two decades.

Election Schedule and Voting RulesVoting will be held in Parliament from 10 AM to 5 PM, followed by counting at 6 PM. MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are eligible to vote, though no party whip can be issued.

Each MP must mark their first preference on the ballot with a special pen; otherwise, the vote will be invalid. In past elections, 11 votes (2017) and 15 votes (2022) were rejected.

Currently, the Lok Sabha has 542 members (one seat vacant) and the Rajya Sabha has 245 members (five vacant). NDA holds 293 Lok Sabha MPs and 129 Rajya Sabha MPs, giving it support from 422 members, well above the required 391 for majority.

If voting falls strictly on party lines, Radhakrishnan is expected to secure 439 votes, while Reddy could get 324 votes. However, cross-voting in the secret ballot remains a possibility.
