Pankaj Chaudhary to be new UP BJP chief
LUCKNOW [Maha Media]: Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary is set to become the new Uttar Pradesh BJP president after filing his nomination at the party’s state headquarters in Lucknow on Saturday.
The deadline for filing nominations was 3 pm, and no other candidate submitted papers during the stipulated time. As a result, Chaudhary, considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, is certain to be elected unopposed to the post.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, along with 10 senior leaders, proposed Chaudhary’s name.
The formal announcement of the new state president will be made on Sunday at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, where Union Minister Piyush Goyal will declare the result. BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde had also reached Lucknow from Delhi on Saturday to oversee the election process.
Earlier, amid speculation over the new UP BJP chief, outgoing state president Swatantra Dev Singh had hinted at the choice without naming him.
Singh said the new president was a seven-time MP, popular within his community, and had handled key organisational responsibilities in the party, a clear reference to Pankaj Chaudhary.
Chaudhary hails from Gorakhpur, considered Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s stronghold, and has been elected seven times as an MP from Maharajganj. He belongs to the OBC Kurmi community.
The appointment of the UP BJP state president was originally scheduled for January 15, 2025, but was repeatedly delayed due to the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Uttar Pradesh bypolls and the Bihar elections.
