SC to hear plea to restore statehood of J&K
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Supreme Court will hear on Friday a petition seeking the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. The petition has been filed by Jammu and Kashmir professor Zahoor Ahmad Bhatt and social worker Khurshid Ahmad Malik. It calls for the central government to be directed to fully restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood within a set timeframe.
The petition argues that panchayat and municipal elections have already been held in Jammu and Kashmir, and the current security and administrative situation is favourable and stable for restoring statehood. Delaying the restoration for too long amounts to a violation of citizens’ rights.
On 5 August 2019, after the abrogation of Article 370, the central government converted Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory. The decision was challenged in the Supreme Court, but in December 2023, the court upheld the removal of Article 370 and the end of its special state status.
At the time, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had assured the Supreme Court that the central government would restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. However, the court did not set a specific deadline for this restoration.
