Chaitra Navratri 2022 colours and their significance
Chaitra Navratri, also known as Vasant Navratri, dedicated to Goddess Durga, is just around the corner.
Goddess Durga represents Shakti or feminine force. A legend associated with the birth of Goddess Durga suggests that the Mother Goddess possesses the combined powers of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva). Moreover, she was born to eliminate a demon named Mahishasura and hence referred to as Mahishasuramardini.
Her pictorial depiction shows her slaying Mahishasura with her trident. Mounted on a lion, Goddess Durga, endowed with ten hands, holds various weapons. Furthermore, the third eye adorns her forehead.
Interestingly, devotees worship Nava Durga during Navratri, and the nine forms of the Goddess are - Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhidatri.
And interestingly, specific colours are associated with each of the nine days. Devotees often follow the colour code and choose their clothing for the celebrations accordingly.
