Kurma Jayanti 2024: Know the Story and Significance
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Kurma Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day of Vaishakh month. This time this festival will be celebrated on 23rd May, Thursday.
The story behind this festival goes that Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma to help the gods and demons in the churning of the ocean. He is also called the Kachhapa Avatar. In the churning of the ocean, fourteen gems including Kalkoot poison, nectar and Goddess Lakshmi were obtained. According to Narasimha Purana, Kurmaavatar is the second incarnation of Lord Vishnu, while according to Bhagavata Purana he is the eleventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Kurma incarnation took place for churning the ocean
According to the legend, once the gods became very proud of their power when Maharishi Durvasa had gifted a garland of Parijat flowers to Indra. Out of arrogance, Indra placed the garland on the head of the elephant Airavata. Seeing this, the sage got angry at Indra and he cursed the gods to become godless and destroyed their happiness and prosperity.
Due to the power and influence of the curse, Lakshmi disappeared into the sea and all the splendor of the Sur-Asur world was destroyed. Saddened by this incident, Indra took refuge in Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu asked Indra to churn the ocean along with the gods and demons. Then as per the orders of Lord Vishnu, the demons and gods got ready to churn the ocean. For this, Mandarachal mountain was made a churner and Nagraj Vasuki was made the rope.
The gods and demons threw Mandarachal into the sea and started churning it, but since the mountain had no base, it started sinking into the sea. Seeing this, Lord Vishnu took the form of a huge Kurma (tortoise) and placed the Mandarachal mountain on his back and placed it in the sea. After this the mountain started rotating rapidly and the churning of the ocean was completed.
