IPL: PBKS aim to extend momentum against SRH
NEW CHANDIGARH [Maha Media]: Punjab Kings will aim to extend their early momentum in IPL 2026 when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 17 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur on Friday, in a contest defined by contrast in form, balance and execution.
Punjab Kings have made a solid start to the season, winning two of their first three matches and establishing themselves as early contenders. Their batting unit has shown stability through skipper Shreyas Iyer, with Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, Azmatullah Omarzai, Marcus Stoinis and Ramandeep Singh providing depth and flexibility in the middle order.
Their bowling attack has also been effective across phases, led by Arshdeep Singh, Lockie Ferguson, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Marco Jansen, while the spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal, Harpreet Brar and Anukul Roy has added control in the middle overs. The combination has allowed PBKS to maintain balance in both high-scoring and tight encounters.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have had a mixed campaign so far, with one win from three matches, showing both explosive potential and fragile consistency. Their batting lineup features Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan (wk), Heinrich Klaasen, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Aiden Markram, Abdul Samad and Liam Livingstone, all of whom are capable of match-winning contributions but have struggled for sustained partnerships.
Their bowling unit, meanwhile, includes Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat, Eshan Malinga, T Natarajan, Shivam Kumar and Harsh Dubey, who have shown glimpses of effectiveness but have lacked consistency in closing out matches under pressure.
The key storyline heading into the clash is PBKS’ structured and balanced approach versus SRH’s high-risk, high-reward style of cricket. While Punjab Kings have relied on collective performances and role clarity, Sunrisers Hyderabad depend heavily on individual bursts, particularly from Klaasen in the middle order.
The pitch at Mullanpur is expected to be balanced, with moderate scoring conditions and assistance for both pacers and spinners. A total around 170 is likely to be competitive, making the toss and early momentum crucial.
As both sides prepare for the contest, Punjab Kings will look to continue their upward trajectory and solidify their position in the table, while Sunrisers Hyderabad will aim to put together a complete performance and convert their explosive potential into a consistent match-winning display.
