3rd ODI: Rohit, Virat shine as India win against Aus

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Star India opener Rohit Sharma struck an unbeaten century, while Virat Kohli made a fighting half-ton as India defeated Australia by nine wickets in the third and final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground here, but lost the series 1-2 on Saturday.

After pacer Harshit Rana came up with superb bowling figures of 4/39 to dismiss Australia for 236 in 46.4 overs, Rohit hit an unbeaten 125-ball 121 to make it a one-sided contest. Rohit shared a vital 69-run partnerships with Shubman Gill (24) for the opening wicket before joining forces with Kohli (74 not out off 81 balls) for another unbroken productive 168-run stand as India chased down the target in 38.3 overs.

It was a dominant show from Rohit and Virat, who are at the fag end of their career. Earlier, India dismissed Australia for just 236 in 46.4 overs, displaying complete control of the game and never letting the Aussies get away, especially after the openers Mitch Marsh and Travis Head, who both got good starts, were sent back.

Rana was the pick of the Indian bowlers with four wickets. Washington Sundar claimed 2 wickets while Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel got one each.

Earlier, Australian skipper Mitch Marsh won the toss and elected to bat. This was the third straight toss lost by Gill in his first series as the ODI skipper. Australia, who have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, made one change to the playing XI, bringing in Nathan Ellis for Xavier Bartlett. India, who are playing for pride, made two changes to the playing XI, with chinaman Kuldeep Yadav and pacer Prasidh Krishna coming in for Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Reddy missed the third ODI because of a left quadriceps injury. "Nitish Kumar Reddy sustained a left quadriceps injury during the second ODI in Adelaide and was subsequently unavailable for selection for the third ODI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him on a daily basis," said the team management in a statement.
