Sabalenka marches into Australian Open semi-finals
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: World No. 1 player Aryna Sabalenka has reached the semifinals of the year's first Grand Slam, the Australian Open. In the quarter-final played on Tuesday, she handed a crushing defeat to 18-year-old American player, Ivana Jovic, in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. This is her 14th Grand Slam semifinal of her career.
Two-time champion Sabalenka won the first set in about an hour. The heat during the match was so intense that the stadium roof had to be closed just before her victory. This is Sabalenka's fourth consecutive Australian Open semifinal. Now, to secure a spot in the final, she will face either Coco Gauff or Elina Svitolina.
On Tuesday, temperatures in Melbourne reached 40 degrees Celsius. Following this, organisers had to implement the ‘Extreme Heat Policy’. Under this, all matches ongoing on outer courts were suspended.
However, matches in the three main stadiums of Melbourne Park, including Rod Laver Arena, were completed under indoor conditions with their roofs closed.
