Hamas hands over the first seven hostages to the Red Cross
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Hamas released seven hostages into the custody of the Red Cross on Monday, the first to be released as part of a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. There was no immediate information on their condition.
Hamas has said 20 living hostages will be exchanged for over 1,900 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
Families and friends of hostages broke out into wild cheers as Israeli television channels announced that the hostages were in the hands of the Red Cross.
Tens of thousands of Israelis are watching the transfers at public screenings across the country, with a major event being held in Tel Aviv.
Hamas said it had finished preparations for freeing its remaining living hostages, which Israel expects to take place early Monday, fulfilling a key step in Donald Trump’s Gaza plan hours before he hosts a peace summit in Egypt.
Meanwhile, Israel said that it expected all living hostages held in Gaza to be released as Palestinians awaited the release of hundreds of prisoners held in Israel and a surge of aid into the famine-stricken territory.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara have written a personal note for the returning hostages.
“On behalf of the entire people of Israel — welcome back! We waited for you, we embrace you,” they wrote.
The note is part of a reception kit hostages will receive that also includes clothing and personal items, a laptop, a mobile phone, and a tablet, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
U.S. President Donald Trump departed on Sunday on a high-stakes peace trip to Israel and Egypt, declaring the “war is over” in Gaza despite uncertainty about what will follow a ceasefire and hostage deal with Hamas.
