Protests erupt in Iran against inflation

NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Thousands of people took to the streets in Iran on Monday to protest rising inflation and the currency crisis. This is being reported as the largest protest in the past three years. Amid the severity of the situation, Mohammad Reza Farzin, the head of the Central Bank, resigned from his post.

In the capital Tehran, traders and shopkeepers protested in Sadi Street and the Grand Bazaar area. Shops remained closed in many places, bringing business to a halt. According to eyewitnesses, protests also took place in major cities like Isfahan, Shiraz, and Mashhad.

The protests intensified as the Iranian rial hit a record low against the dollar, causing prices of food and daily necessities to rise further.

According to government figures, the inflation rate in December was over 42%, while food prices had increased by more than 70%.
