Trump advisor calls Ukraine conflict 'Modi war'
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Peter Navarro, trade advisor to former US President Donald Trump, on Wednesday labelled the Ukraine conflict a "Modi war," accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of playing a double game.
In an interview with Bloomberg Television, Navarro alleged that India buys cheap oil from Russia, refines it, and sells it at higher prices. “This gives Russia money for the war, which it then uses to attack Ukraine,” he said.
Navarro also warned that India’s growing ties with Russia and China could pose a global threat. “India, you are aligning with dictators. China has occupied Aksai Chin and other territories. And Russia? Let it go. They are not your friends,” he said.
Navarro added that the profits Indian refineries make from Russian crude, sold both domestically and internationally, indirectly fund Russia’s war efforts. “Russia attacks Ukraine and kills people. Then Ukraine comes to us and Europe asking for more funds. American taxpayers bear the loss,” he argued.
He concluded that the collaboration between Indian and Russian refineries harms the US economically, as India benefits from low-cost Russian oil while the conflict continues.
Navarro also dismissed India's claims on oil imports and accused Modi of being arrogant. He said that India's purchase of 1.5 million barrels of Russian oil every day is enough to buy weapons, drones, and bombs to kill Ukrainians.
This comment comes at a time when the US has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods. This move is expected to impact 66% of India's exports to the US. The bilateral trade between India and the US was $131.8 billion in 2024-25.
