July 2022 Festival calendar

Half a year has passed and now the seventh month of 2022, that is, July is starting from tomorrow. This month has great importance in Hinduism. According to the Hindi Panchang, the festivals begin with the month of Sawan and the month of July is of Ashadha-Sawan.

And the holy period of Chaturmas also commences during this month. Therefore, July is filled with a list of dates significant both across the country and specific regions. From the world-famous Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra of Odisha to Guru Purnima, from Shravan Maas and Hariyali Teej, July has myriad festivals this year. 

List of Hindu festivals in July 2022


Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra
The Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra of Odisha will commence on July 1. During this community festival, devotees pull three giant wooden chariots carrying the idols of Lord Jagannath and his siblings, Balbhadra and Subhadra, from the iconic Puri shrine.


Devshayani Ekadashi
The Ekadashi of Ashadha, Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the Moon), is called Devshayani Ekadashi. And this is because ancient scriptures suggest that Lord Vishnu goes into a state of Yogic sleep on this day and wakes up only after four months. Hence, the name Devshayani, where Dev means Lord Vishnu and Shayani means resting. This year, Devshayani Ekadashi vrat will be observed on July 10.


Guru Purnima
The day dedicated to Gurus, mentors, teachers and trainers is called Guru Purnima The Purnima tithi (Full Moon day) in the month of Ashadha is devoted to those who play a pivotal role in nurturing and shaping people's lives by imparting knowledge. This year, Guru Purnima will be celebrated on July 13.


Shravan month begins
The holy month of Shravan dedicated to Lord Shiva begins on July 14. According to Hindu beliefs, Shravan is the first month of the Chaturmas period, and during this month, devotees of Lord Shiva take part in the Kanwar Yatra and observe a vrat on Mondays.


Gajanan Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi
Lord Ganesha devotees observe the Sankashti vrat on the Chaturthi Tithi, Krishna Paksha, every Hindu month. The Sankashti Vrat of Shravan, Krishna Paksha, is Gajanan Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi. This year, it will be celebrated on July 16.


Kamika Ekadashi
Kamika Ekadashi (Ekadashi/eleventh day of the Shravan, Krishna Paksha/waning phase of the Moon) is one of the most important Ekadashis. It is said that a devotee can get rid of the Pitru Dosha by offering the holy Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu on this day. And by keeping a fast, one can even attain Moksha. This year, Kamika Ekadashi will be observed on July 24.


Sawan Shivratri
Devotees celebrate the Shravan Shivratri on the Chaturdashi Tithi, Shravan Krishna Paksha. This year, devotees shall celebrate Shravan Shivratri on July 26.


Hariyali Teej
Hariyali Teej, dedicated to Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati, is celebrated by women from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Dressed as new brides, married women observe a day-long fast to pray for their husband's wellbeing and good health. This year, Hariyali Teej will be celebrated on July 31.
