May 2022 festival calendar
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The Gregorian month of May usually concurs with the Hindu months of Vaishakha and Jyestha. During this month, several regional and pan Indian festivals are observed annually. Interestingly, this month also has numerous festivals, namely Ekadashi, Pradosh vrat, Narasimha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima etc. Scroll down to check out the festivals, dates and significance in May 2022.
Shankaracharya Jayanti, Surdas Jayanti and Ramanuja Jayanti - May 6
The 1233 birth anniversary of Adi Shankaracharya will be observed on May 17 this year. Devotees celebrate his birth anniversary on the Panchami Tithi of Vaishakha, Shukla Paksha. Two other great saints - Surdas and Ramanuja - were born on the same Tithi. Surdas is one of the greatest devotees of Shri Krishna, while Ramanuja was a great philosopher, thinker and patron of the Vaishnava sect. This year, devotees shall observe the 543rd anniversary of the poet/musician and the 1005th birth anniversary of the Shri Ramanujacharya.
Ganga Saptami - May 8
Ganga Saptami marks the date of Ganga's rebirth. First, Sage Jahnu drank the water of Ganga and prevented her from flowing any further after she unknowingly destroyed his hermitage. Subsequently, at King Bhagiratha's behest, the sage released Ganga from one of his ears on the Saptami Tithi, Vaishakha, Shukla Paksha.
Bhanu Saptami - May 9
Surya Dev, or the Sun God, is believed to have appeared for the first time on the Saptami Tithi, which fell on a Sunday. Hence, when the Saptami Tithi (seventh day) concurs with Ravivar (Sunday), devotees celebrate Bhanu Saptami to pay an ode to the Sun God.
Sita Navami - May 10
Devi Sita, the consort of Shri Rama, was born on the Navami Tithi, Vaishakha, Shukla Paksha. Therefore, devotees observe her birth anniversary.
Mohini Ekadashi and Apara Ekadashi - May 12 and May 26
The Ekadashi Tithi of Vaishakha, Shukla Paksha, is Mohini Ekadashi. Devotees of Lord Vishnu start observing a fast from the evening of the Dashami Tithi and conclude it in the morning of Dwadashi.
The Ekadashi Vrat of Jyestha, Krishna Paksha, is Apara Ekadashi. This year, Mohini and Apara Ekadashi Vrat will be kept on May 12 and May 26, respectively.
Narasimha Jayanti - May 14
Lord Narasimha, the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, first appeared on the Chaturdashi Tithi, Vaishakha, Shukla Paksha. Hence, devotees celebrate his birth anniversary.
Buddha Purnima and Vaishakha Purnima Vrat - May 16
The Full Moon day (Purnima Tithi) of Vaishakha month marks Gautama Buddha's birth date. This year, Buddhists shall observe the 2584th birth anniversary of the founder of the Buddhist religion.
Interestingly, it is also a perfect day for organising the Satyanarayan Puja.
Narada Jayanti - May 17
The Pratipada Tithi of Jyestha, Krishna Paksha, marks the birth anniversary of Devarshi Narada Muni, the son of Lord Brahma and Goddess Saraswati. This year, Narada Jayanti falls on May 17.
Ekadanta Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi - May 19
Lord Ganesha devotees shall observe a day-long fast and break it only after sighting the Moon on the Chaturthi Tithi of Vishakha, Krishna Paksha (as per the Amavasyant calendar), or Jyestha, Krishna Paksha (according to the Purnimant calendar). This year, Ekadanta Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on May 19.
Vat Savitri Vrat - May 30
Married women observe a day-long fast to pray for the well-being of their husbands. This day is celebrated to pay tribute to Savitri, who tricked Lord Yama (the God of death) into restoring her husband Satyawan's life. It is observed on the Amavasya Tithi in the month of Jyeshtha.
Shani Jayanti - May 30
Shani Jayanti is observed on the Amavasya Tithi of Jyestha Krishna Paksha. Hence, devotees pay an ode to Lord Shani, often hailed as the Lord of Justice. This year, Shani Jayanti will be celebrated on May 30.
