Delhi Test: Jadeja departs Campbell for 115 runs
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: Ravindra Jadeja provided Team India with a much-needed breakthrough as he dismissed John Campbell for 115. Campbell, who secured his maiden Test century, stitched a massive 177-run partnership with Shai Hope.
West Indies resumed Day 4 at 177/2, with John Campbell anchoring the innings. He displayed remarkable patience and skill against the Indian bowlers, negotiating probing spells from Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja. Campbell steadily accumulated runs with careful defence and occasional aggressive strokes, including a massive six off Jadeja that brought up his maiden Test century from 174 balls. His innings was marked by determination and composure, making him the first West Indies opener in over two years to reach three figures in India.
Campbell’s vigil ended at 115 off 199 balls, caught lbw off Jadeja after a brief review. Shai Hope supported him with sensible batting, helping the side reach 212/3 in 64 overs. Roston Chase joined the crease, aiming to stabilise the innings after Campbell’s departure. India, meanwhile, kept a tight grip with disciplined bowling and sharp fielding, creating pressure through maidens, close calls, and fielding brilliance, while the West Indies pair worked to consolidate and push past the 200-run mark.
With a 270-run lead, India enforced the follow-on, and the West Indies showed much better intent in their second innings. Despite losing two early wickets for just 35 runs, openers John Campbell and Shai Hope led a remarkable recovery. Both batters looked composed and confident, bringing up their respective fifties and stitching together an unbeaten century stand that steadied the innings.
At stumps, the West Indies stood at 173/2, with Campbell unbeaten on 87 and Hope on 66. Their partnership has given the visitors renewed hope heading into Day 4. For India, Mohammed Siraj and Washington Sundar claimed one wicket each as the hosts continue to search for a breakthrough to regain control of the match.
