Netflix brings ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ to screens
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: The Broadway production of ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ is set to make its way to Netflix, according to Variety. The streaming platform is filming the stage play this week for a future release, bringing the theatrical expansion of the ‘Stranger Things’ universe to audiences worldwide.
The filmed version will capture the show’s original Broadway company in its current run. To facilitate filming, producers Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions cancelled performances from February 10 to February 14. Regular performances will resume on February 15. A release date for the recorded version has not yet been announced, as per Variety.
The Broadway cast is led by Tony nominee Louis McCartney, who reprises his role as Henry Creel after originating the character in London’s West End production. A new ensemble is scheduled to take over in late March, with Victor de Paula Rocha stepping into the role of Henry Creel.
He will be joined by Ayana Cymone as Patty Newby, Shea Grant as Joyce Maldonado, Juan Carlos as Bob Newby and Matthew Erick White as James Hopper Jr, according to Variety.
‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ opened at the Marquis Theatre on April 22, 2025, following its West End debut in December 2023. Written by Kate Trefry and based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Trefry, the play serves as a standalone prequel rooted in the mythology of the hit Netflix series.
Set in Hawkins in 1959, the story follows teenage Henry Creel as his family moves to town seeking a new beginning. As mysterious events unfold, Henry begins to confront the unsettling possibility that he may be linked to the growing darkness around him.
The production delves into the early lives of familiar characters while establishing connections to the television series, including its upcoming fifth and final season.
Directed by Stephen Daldry and co-directed by Justin Martin, the large-scale production features a 34-member cast and elaborate stagecraft that combines practical effects with cinematic techniques. The Duffer Brothers are creative producers, and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment serves as associate producer.
Netflix previously chronicled the making of the stage show in the documentary Behind the Curtain: ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’, which was released in April 2025, reported Variety.
With filming underway at the Marquis Theatre, the Broadway chapter of ‘Stranger Things’ is set to reach a wider audience, giving fans a chance to experience the theatrical prequel on screen.
